Excerpt:

“That and taking a bullet for you is my job. I do it well. You must believe that, too, or you would have hired someone else.”
“You are one stubborn man. My grandfather’s mules could take
lessons from you. I’ll be out in ten minutes.” She whirled around and headed for her bathroom in the back, then shut the door.
Cutter couldn’t stop the smile from creeping across his face. Had
Shealyn just compared him to an ass?
He’d decided she had when she emerged in a gauzy white dress trimmed in lace that accentuated the hint of gold in her sun-kissed skin. The thin straps clung to the tips of her shoulders, as if threatening to slip down at any moment, and played peekaboo with her blond tresses. The garment stretched tight across her breasts, the three little buttons keeping the bodice shut threatening to pop if she made a too-
sudden move. The flimsy thing also ended well above her knees and, with her white cowboy boots, framed her sleek thighs.
Cutter felt his thoughts evaporate and his tongue go dry. The rest of him turned stone hard. He shouldn’t think twice about Shealyn as a woman, but so far, that seemed to be asking the impossible.
            “You’re wearing that?”
She cocked her head at him. “What’s wrong with it? Or are you suggesting this dress is somehow dangerous?”
Her challenge and sass turned him on even more. Hell, everything about her did.
But he was way out of line. The dress portrayed precisely the image she’d cultivated. It was sweetly sexy. Wearing it, Shealyn looked like a gorgeous siren with western flair… and a hint of innocence. The problem—and obviously all the lust—was his alone.
“I’m making you aware that you may attract unwanted male attention in public. But I’ll handle it,” Cutter promised, meeting her gaze and doing his best to shutter the desire burning through his blood.
She stared back, a hint of a smile playing at her lips. “You think I’ll attract male attention, huh?”
Was she fishing for compliments? Her green eyes danced with something he couldn’t put his finger on. Mischief? Flirtation? No. Why would she come on to him when she was already in a high-profile relationship? Shealyn didn’t strike him as one of those women who got off on yanking a man’s chain. Then again, he didn’t know her well.
Whatever she was up to, he couldn’t rise to her bait.
“Ms. West?” He kept his voice as inflectionless and polite as possible.
“Mr. Bryant.” Another hint of playful dare rang in her tone.
            “I told you, it’s Cutter.”
“All right. Cutter.” She damn near sighed his name. “You going to answer my question?”
What the hell did she want him to say? Some reckless part of him he’d sworn he didn’t possess itched to simply show her, cross the half- dozen steps between them, take that wisp of a garment in his grip, and tear it off. Once he’d exposed every inch of her body, he would love to put his hands on her, his mouth on her, so she understood what a dress like that did to him. Hell, what she did to him.
A sudden pounding on the door broke the moment between them.
“You ready yet?” Tower shouted from outside.
Despite the man’s insistence, she didn’t move to admit him or even answer. She just stared Cutter’s way. “I’m waiting.”
Cutter searched for a discreet reply. “The dress reveals more skin than it hides. It might give a man the wrong idea.”
            “What idea is that?”
The kinds of ideas racing through his head with juggernaut speed and jetting blood south to his cock. “That he can touch you. That he can have you.”
“Is that what this dress makes you think?”
The flash of her eyes and the husky voice she used to ask the question torqued him up. She was definitely fishing for his reaction. Was she hoping he bit because she needed the ego stroke… or was she baiting her hook and tossing it his way because she was actually hoping to reel him in?
“What I think about the dress doesn’t matter.”
“Then why does it bother you? You saw me in less on set.”
Oh, he’d seen her damn near naked. Hour after hour of exposed skin had taunted him with all the beauty a country boy like him would never have the right to possess. But this dress appealed to his deepest fantasies. She looked wholesome yet sensual, a woman aware of her appeal. A female who knew exactly what she wanted in her man…

Nikki’s Review:

It's always fun to dive back into Shayla Black's Wicked Lovers world. This is a spin off of that series, but you get little glimpses from past characters. If you're a fan of the Wicked Lovers series, then you'll fall head over heels in love with this new one!

I love Cutter! He is every bit the southern gentleman. And Wicked sexy! He has that protective alpha thing going on in spades. The heroine, Shealyn, goes weak in the knees over new bodyguard. And who the hell can blame her!

Shealyn is a Hollywood starlet. She has a seemingly perfect life. She has wealth beauty, and, fame. But she isn't truly fulfilled. Enter Cutter Bryant!

I loved the red hot chemistry between these two. It was definitely "insta lust" and they fell in love fast, but there was also a hesitance on both sides. She has a hard time trusting, and he has responsibilities back home.

Cutter has been hired to protect Shealyn from someone who is blackmailing her. Like many of Ms. Black's books, this one is a romantic suspense. And there are very few authors who write suspense and mystery quite like this author. She keeps me guessing at every turn. I was wrong a number of times on who was the bad guy. I didn't even see it coming! But what I really like is that the suspense aspect doesn't overshadow the romance. The love story is the focal point.

Both of these characters have a ton of baggage, but the need to be together is overwhelming. I could feel the emotions and want spilling off of the pages. It was palpable.

I'm dying to read Brea's book! I know there's more to her story and I need answers! Devoted to Pleasure is an amazing start to this new series by Shayla Black!

The Outlaw Series book #2
Erotic Romance/Post Apocalyptic
Review copy provided by the publisher

Nikki’s Review:

There are very few books in the romance genre that can make me blush...almost none!
But Jesus, this series just does me in! It is wickedly over the top. But so damn delicious!

Jamie and Lennox are living in a post apocalyptic world. They're best friends and there isn't anyone they trust more than each other. There's definite chemistry beyond friendship, though neither would admit it out loud. They, and the other people that are apart of their wayward community, grab life by the balls and enjoy whatever pleasure they can find. Because your tomorrow isn't guaranteed and your freedom is fragile.

The struggle to get together was a constant in this book. These characters have no one is this world. Sure, they have friends, but they don't have anyone that feels like home. Neither is willing to destroy the most important thing in their lives...their friendship. But when things finally heat up, and I mean really heat up, there's no going back. They have to risk everything to not only be lovers, but to hold onto the only thing that brings them peace.

The world building in this series is phenomenal. You get a real sense of what it might be like to try and survive in a world torn apart by disease and war. The author, Ms. Kennedy, uses words to paint a vivid picture. I could "see" it all.

There's enough suspense and action to satisfy the adrenaline junkie in anyone. And the love scenes are absolutely tantalizing! The balance of violence and romance is brilliant and will keep you reading way past your bedtime!

RUINED SPOTLIGHT AND EXCERPT

Blurb

One of the Barnes brothers, Sebastien has always felt blessed. Not only
does he have an amazing family, but he’s become a Hollywood golden boy who
has everything he’s ever wanted—with one exception. He’s had a thing for
Marin since he was a kid, but when he finally summons the courage to ask
her out, she turns him down. Marin is ready to settle down, she wants
commitment and stability, and Sebastien is still too much of a playboy,
caught up in the wild life of the spotlight.

Still reeling from the rejection, Sebastien’s luck runs out later that
night when he saves a girl from an assault. The shining knight role fits
him just fine, but his armor—and his perfect life—become tarnished when the
near-deadly attack lands him in the hospital. Physically scarred, he gives
up acting and retreats from everybody.

If anyone can pull Sebastien back from the abyss, it’s Marin. But first she
has to convince him that beauty is not only skin deep…

Excerpt

“movie star Maybe you should go.”
“I came here to talk to you.” Marin slid off the counter, one hand going to
smooth her skirt down, while the other absently went up to smooth her hair.
That was a Hollywood queen for you, he thought. She always knew how to look
her best, without even trying. “Yeah, because we’ve done so much
talking—you coming into my bedroom while I was taking a shower.”
She went red. “You didn’t close the door, you overgrown moron. I was
talking to her when I came in and I didn’t realize until…”
“Until what?” He came closer and lowered his face until he could breathe
her in once more. “Until you saw me there, jacking off while I had the
scent of you in my head and the thought of how you might taste burning a
hole in me?”
Marin’s eyes went opaque and it took everything he had not to reach for her
and finish what they’d started.
“You,” she said, voice shaking. “Are a jackass. It was an accident.”
“Yeah? How long did you stand there?”
She opened her mouth, then closed it. While she stood gaping there,
Sebastien struggled with the hunger inside him and wondered how he’d ever
manage to be around her again without it destroying them both. Finally, she
sputtered out, “It was hardly more than a few seconds. For goodness sake,
Sebastien. You act like we’ve never seen each other naked. It’s not like I
don’t know you have a dick.”
Hearing those words on her lips exploded something inside his head and he
almost reached for her—again.
But he backed away instead.
“You need to go,” he said carefully. “Because if you don’t, I’m going to
put my hands on you again and I won’t stop until you’re under me and
moaning my name. By the time I’m done, you won’t even remember anybody
else’s.”
Chin lifted mutinously, Marin glared at him. “Nice to know you’re still
stuck in that teenage hormone rush, Sebastien. If you ever grow out of it,
you’ll make some woman very happy one day.”
He growled and took a step forward.
Marin ignored him as she cut around the island and reached into the purse
she’d left there earlier.
“I wanted to bring this out to you—okay, no, I didn’t. JD wanted me to
bring it. I told him it was a waste of time and that you’d given up.” She
dumped something on the island and it didn’t take more than a second for
him to recognize a script.
“Take it back,” he said sourly. “I’m done.”
Marin smiled at him sweetly. “That’s what I told him. You never see
anything through when it gets too hard.”
“Marin…”
“It’s okay, honey. As you get older—”
He lunged after her and she backed away, eyes widening slightly.
Finally, she was getting it.
He snatched up the manuscript as she turned and walked away. “You forgot
something.”
She flipped him off over her shoulder.
“I’d rather fuck you,” he shouted at her back.
He waited for a response, but apparently she was done with his temper.
He looked down at the script and in a fit of temper—mostly self-directed—he
hurled it across the room. His home was done in an open air design and
nothing separated the kitchen from the eating area or the living room. The
heavy, bound stack of pages ended up by the aquarium and he continued to
glare at it for untold minutes.
It wasn’t until the alarm chimed, letting him know somebody had left the
premises that he managed to snap himself out of it.
Swearing, he dragged his hands down his face and then he made himself go
over and pick up the script.
When he saw the title, he almost dropped it.

T O R N

He didn’t drop the script though. He’d throw it away. Maybe burn it in his
fire pit.
He might have been able to do it, too.
But he saw the handwritten note next the title of script, typed in out such
stark font. By contrast, Marin’s handwriting stood out even more. He knew
her writing as well as his own and he knew for a fact she’d written this
note well before their little…okay, big argument.

Sebastien
Read the script. I know you wanted the part before, but it wasn’t right for
you. Maybe you don’t want it now, but I can tell, this part needs you and I
think you need it. This is your life and it’s time you come back to it.
You’re missed, Seb. By a lot of us and I’m not talking your fans. We all
miss you. Your friends miss you. Your family misses you. I miss you.

I’m playing Marlena and I can’t think of anybody I’d rather have acting as
the male lead other than you.

You’re ready for this, Seb.

Read the script.

TTYS,
Marin

He gripped the script tighter, absently smoothing down pages he’d crumpled
with his carelessness.
He’d just mail it back to JD. Marin wouldn’t be back out here any time
soon—if ever.

THE BOURBON KINGS & WARD Q&A

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

The Bourbon Kings #1

Liza’s Review:

I really tried to like The Bourbon Kings. I’ve liked some of Ward’s other contemporary books, so figured I’d enjoy her new series. Sadly, The Bourbon Kings was a DNF (Did Not Finish) read for me. I loved the 80’s primetime soap operas, but felt The Bourbon Kings was just a little too over the top for me. Honestly the only main character I even liked was Lizzie and she basically was a servant to the Bradford family, or at least treated like one. I wasn’t a fan of Tulane “Lane” at all and couldn’t understand why Lizzie would have waited around for him. I actually gave up at about 30% so I can’t say for sure that the story didn’t get better. While The Bourbon Kings didn’t work for me, I believe it will work for other fans of contemporary books. I do plan on giving the next book in the series a try, and plan to read it with an open mind.

Even without finishing The Bourbon Kings, there was no way I was going to miss out on a Ward Q&A session. Luckily, Ward was in Nashville for release day.

Q&A at Salon@615 in Nashville, TN at the Nashville Public Library

JR Ward started out talking about her new series.  The Bourbon Kings takes place in the South, and Ward stated the South is a character in itself. Ward moved to the South 10 years ago from the Boston area and said it was a bit of a culture shock for her. When asked it she had trouble moving from writing paranormal books to contemporary books, she said it wasn’t an issue as she basically has the same process for all her writing.  I have to say she totally cracked me up trying not to cuss during the entire Q&A, but have to say she wasn’t successful and soon the f-bombs and s-bombs were flying. J

Once the audience was allowed to ask questions, the Q&A pretty much turned into a BDB Q&A session, though The Bourbon King series had a few questions mixed in as well.

Ward currently has 6 books planned out for the BDB.

She does currently have 3 books under contract for The Bourbon Kings and totally admitted it was very much like Dynasty/Falcon Crest/Knots Landing from the 80’s. She totally wants to be Alexis Carrington Colby. Ward said The Bourbon Kings books have good conflict, romantic relationships and offers multiple POVs. She wants people to be invested enough to come back for book after book.

Unlike in the BDB series, Ward actually based some of the characters in The Bourbon Kings books on real people. She named Lizzie, Greta and a few other characters.

Her writing process is the same no matter what she is writing. She says she actually sees pictures of the stories in her head and writes down what she is seeing.

Ward did say The Bourbon Kings has an element of mystery in the book, and she totally said who died in the book…one of the first f-bombs that was dropped.

Ward was asked if she drank bourbon and she said no, that she doesn’t drink. Actually said “could you imagine this shit drunk?”

Lassiter will be in Blood Kissed and he wears the funniest outfit in the history of outfits.

Devina will be back at some point in the BDB books.

Asked if she would write any other paranormal books and she said maybe…tried to say more, but had to leave it as maybe.

Asked if iAm and The Queen would appear in future books or have more stories and she said they were pretty much done.

People asked about the pronunciations of the characters changing on the audiobooks. Ward said they had never asked how to pronounce the names in the beginning, and no one ever thought to give them out. They changed the pronunciations for The Shadows.

No one will ever find out John Matthew is actually Darius. She did say Xhex does have an idea that JM is something more because of the shadows she sees around him, but doesn’t know why.

There is currently a TV option for The Bourbon Kings and while Ward can’t talk about it in detail, she did say she feels the right team of people hare working on it.

She keeps no notes or drawings about the house or the characters.

Blood Kiss will only have 4 POVs. Butch, Marissa, Craeg, and Paradise.

Layla & Xcor will have page time in The Beast…she really acted like she wanted to say more, but they shut her down.

Muhrder will be back. Ward thought he would appear in The Shadows. We might see him in The Beast. JM has to get into the Brotherhood first. Plus big issues with Xhex and Muhrder and their past as we know so little about Xhex’s past after leaving the Symphath colony.

I really feel like she will say more about everything at the Louisville, KY signing and Q&A on Saturday. As the Nashville event started at 6:15 at night, I think her Q&A session was shorter than normal.
