  SYNOPSIS:

Some scars go further than skin deep…

1988 doesn’t end well for Jessica Abraham. In just one week she turns thirty, loses her day job, and loses the role of Ophelia to a younger actress. Rallying, she goes after a part at a theater outside of the city, but the director’s plan to hide her beauty behind hair, makeup, and wardrobe from Cosmo’s “Don't” column shakes her confidence to the core. For the first time in her acting career, she won’t be able to rely on her carefully managed physical charms. Only her craft will count. On a snowy night early in January 1989, a woman calls into DJ Callihan Alonso’s alt-rock radio show at the end of her commute. He asks her to call back the next night, and the next, just so he'll know she’s home safe. There's something about her voice that has him wanting more, but the longer they talk, the closer she gets. Compromising each and every wall he's built around his heart. If two lonely people fall in love over late-night phone calls, will meeting face-to-face make them, or break them?

In this heart-rending but happy-ending retro rom-com, it may be the end of a decade,

but it’s the beginning of a love story.

EXCERPT

CHAPTER SEVEN

This week on Hawaii Five-O, Jack Ward gets his hair shellacked. On Dallas, Miss Ellie gets waxed. Or is that whacked? Whatever, all you have to do right now is stick with rock scientist Cal Alonso and his mute sock-puppet sidekick. They’ll be back right after this station identification.

JESS

I’ve decided that Cal and I need to get to know each other. Part of me wishes I knew what he looks like, but at the same time it’s nice that he can’t see me. Like, right now, my makeup’s gone, my hair’s in a messy bun and I’m in my rattiest sweats—the ones I can’t wear in public because of the mysterious stains on the backside. On the phone with Cal, I can stretch on the floor in comfort while we chat instead of pretending to look interested while a guy talks endlessly about himself. I can be myself.

I play so many roles these days, both on and offstage, that I’m actually not sure I know how to be that girl, but on the phone with Cal feels like a safe place to try.

Cal seemed wary when I suggested we play twenty questions, but I’m going to do my best to make it fun. “Okay, I’ll start. Nothing huge. Just the basics, like what’s your favorite TV show? Do you watch TV? Maybe you don’t since you work nights.”

“I watch sports on weekend afternoons.”

“Ugh, sports. Such a guy.” I make sure I put a tease in my voice because I know how guys are about their teams. “What about Sunday night? I’m guessing MacGyver.”

“Actually, I’m kind of a Moonlighting fan.”

“Really? That is interesting.”

“What’s so interesting about that?

“It’s, you know, romantic.” I’d never admit it, but I love a guy with a romantic side.

“Romantic? It’s a mystery show.”

“Uh-huh. You keep telling yourself that.”

“I most certainly will. What about you?” I’ve always loved how you can hear emotion in a person’s voice, but with Cal, I depend on it even more since I can’t picture him. Right now, I’m getting a flirty color from him that makes me want more.

Not only is it distracting, I’m stumped for an answer. “I don’t know why I asked this question. I barely watch TV because of my schedule. I get home too late.”

“Can’t you tape shows you want to watch?”

“I could if my VCR wasn’t broken. Now I have to wait for my brother to decide he needs the latest model so he’ll give me his old one. Meanwhile, I’m stuck watching whatever’s on if I want to watch anything.”

“What would you be watching if you weren’t talking to me?”

“Um, tonight, probably Thirtysomething, but I would’ve missed the first fifteen minutes, so maybe not. I’ll have to catch up on the reruns this summer. Otherwise, I’ll never know if Hope has another baby or if Nancy and Elliot go through with their divorce, or—”

After his snort of laughter, I go for playful defensiveness. “Are you laughing at me?”

“Of course not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“I’m not. I have no idea who those people are.”

“They’re my TV friends. Don’t you have TV friends?”

“Yes, but…” Trailing off, he clears his throat.

“Oh, ho. Cal has TV friends he’s ashamed of.”

When he doesn’t say anything, it’s my turn to laugh.

Joining me he asks, “Who’s laughing at who now?”

“Come on, you have to tell. Is it Big Bird? Oscar the Grouch? I could totally see that.”

I have to wait for the answer while he puts me on hold to do his actual job, but when he returns, he jumps right back in. “When I was little, I definitely identified with both of those guys, but I have managed to move on from Sesame Street since then.”

There’s still a smile in his tone, so I press on. “Then are your TV friends game show people or soap opera people?”

“Can I plead the fifth on that?”

“Mm-hmm. Soap opera people, then. Which show could it be? Hang on. I’m grabbing my TV Guide.”

“It was All My Children, okay? I used to watch the soaps with my mom.”

“Aww.” Very cute. As long as he’s not still living with his mom. That would be problematic.

“She called them her stories.”

“Weren’t you in school when that was on?”

“I was home sick a lot.”

“Oh, that’s too bad.” He doesn’t elaborate, and I think I’ve pushed far enough. “One more: Lassie or Mr. Rogers?”

“Definitely Mr. Rogers. Lassie was too scary.”

“It was for me too, but I love dogs, so I’d make my sister watch with me. You were a sensitive little guy, huh?”

“I guess I was.”

“I love that. I’d like to see a picture of you as a little kid.” Even though talking like this is cozy, my brain still craves an image to go with the voice.

“Yeah, there aren’t many of those.” Something beeps in the background. “Listen, I should go. But thanks for talking to me instead of watching Thirtysomething.”

“You’re welcome. You’re better than TV friends.”

“Good night, Jess.”

“Good night, Cal.”

I totally forgot to stretch after class I was in such a hurry to call Cal, so I’m a bit stiff as I get to my feet to hang up the phone. Carefully lifting my leg to the barre, I try to picture him. A guy with a voice that masculine and sexy has to be good-looking, right?

But what if he isn’t? Am I that shallow? Ticking through an imaginary slideshow of all the guys I’ve ever gone out with, I have to conclude that I am.

Not to mention that my vanity has me doing everything within my power to enhance my good bits and hide the bad. So much about attraction has to do with appearance. Right?

Could I fall for a guy who isn’t handsome? I’m attracted to Cal when we talk, but what if we met and one, or both, of us were disappointed in what we see?

What would we do then?

Cheery baker dreams of finding Mr. Right…

Some might see it as a self-fulfilling prophecy, but for Leanna, being the go-to baker for Meet Me at the Altar is a dream come true. There’s nothing she loves more than to create the perfect desserts to help couples celebrate their big days. But despite what they say about the way to a man’s heart being through his stomach, Leanna has yet to lure her perfect man with her sweet treats.

Uptight workaholic dreams of being left alone…

If Brody King is going to take time off, he would much rather it be to train for his triathlon and not his brother’s engagement party. It would be one thing if it was just a regular party, but no, his brother and his bride-to-be had to go over the top and plan a full week of family togetherness and ridiculous wedding games. There’s no way he’s going to survive it.

When Brody crashes into Leanna and a hundred cupcakes are ruined, he does the only thing he can–he offers to help her make more. All it takes is a few cups of sugar and a dash of vanilla before Brody is craving not just Leanna’s sweet treats, but the baker herself.

Excerpt 1: Kellan

“Kellan, I have a proposition for you.”
The last time Derek Bishop had a proposition for me, I ended up taking his sister to our senior prom. Of course, that was over ten years ago.
“What kind of proposition?”
“Well, you know how I’m overseeing the research division at Syntec now?”
“Yes.”
“I’m working with a doctor at Stanford who will be leading a research expedition for a project I’m working on, and I could use your help.”
“My help? With what?”
“Protection. For him and his team.”
“What are they researching?”
“Plant compounds that can be used in medicine. New medicine, hopefully. He’s a pharmaceutical botanist. And an MD, which will be beneficial to the locals.”
“Where are they headed?”
“An island off the coast of Costa Rica. La Isla Azul.”
The blue island.
“I’ve never heard of it.”
“I wouldn’t expect you have. It’s a refuge, a sanctuary protected from tourists and the rest of the world. Other than the residents of a small fishing village, it’s basically uninhabited. The Costa Rican government only allows access to it for research and education.”
“Then what do they need protecting from?”
“The Latin American drug cartel. You know as well as I do how dangerous South America can be without the protection of borders. Places like Peru, Columbia, and Nicaragua have been known to use the island to stash drugs on their way up to the states because it isn’t policed.”
“So you want me to go with this doctor to Costa Rica and do what? Sleep in a tent and follow him around with a gun while he looks for plants?”
“No tents. There are a few vacation homes on the island that were left empty when the government sanctioned it a decade ago. They refurbished one of them for groups like ours to use. I’m not promising the Four Seasons, but it should be sufficient for everyone.”
“Who’s everyone?”
“Dr. Paul Hernandez, Mia Lawrence, and Jason Walker.”
“And they’re all plant doctors?”
“Mia and Jason are plant pathologists. Mia’s also studying to be a physician. They’re both in Dr. Hernandez’s mentoring program at Stanford. They’re young in their field, but Dr. Hernandez made a strong case for them. He’s been leading expeditions like this for the last twenty years, so I trust his judgement.”
“It’s just the three of them?”
“Yes, but I need you to find two more recruits. Maybe Adam and one of your other military buddies.”
“You haven’t even convinced me to do this.”
“Why do you need convincing? It’s three months in paradise.”
“Three months?” I say incredulously.
“It’ll be like a vacation.”
“Will there be air-conditioning on this vacation?”
“No.”
“Hot water?”
“Not necessarily.”
“Then it’s no vacation.”
“Kellan, look. I know the last year has been hard on you, after what happened in Afghanistan. Maybe it would be good for you to get away from everything for a while. Reset. Soak up the sun. Wander around a rainforest in the middle of nowhere. Surf.”
“I haven’t surfed in a while.”
“I’ll actually be paying you to surf every day.”
“Will there be food? First aid? I don’t want to die of an infection from a mosquito bite.”
“Yes, of course. We’re actually setting up a rudimentary clinic where Dr. Hernandez can treat the locals who live in the fishing village. Speaking of which, your Spanish might come in handy.”
I get up from Adam’s couch and look around his one-bedroom apartment, where I’ve been living for the last few months. We spent the last few years holed up together in Afghanistan, but at least I had my own bed. “Okay.”
“You’ll do it?”
“Yes,” I say tentatively.
“But not alone,” he insists.
“Why?”
“I know you’re tough, Kellan, and you’ve seen a lot—oorah and all that—but if something were to happen, if you were to encounter someone…without numbers, it could be bad. You need to bring company. At least two other guys. Military trained. They’ll be paid well, you can assure them. I trust your judgement in choosing them.”
Adam walks into the room, yawning.
“Let me get back to you, Derek.”
“Okay.”
I hang up the phone and call to the kitchen, “Hey, Adam, I have a proposition for you.”

Nikki's Review:

Let me start by saying...how gorgeous is the cover for this book?! I don’t know how to explain it, but it gave me all sorts of warm fuzzy feelings when I was staring at it. Maybe I’m just desperate for a vacation in these COVID times, but the cover just pulled me in.

This book is all kinds of romantic. Shocker, eh? I mean, it’s a romance book after all! But I’m serious here, it’s REALLY romantic. There’s an important suspense aspect in this book, but when I wasn’t being pulled into that part of the plot, and I was really pulled in, I was totally swooning over the hero, Kellan. He’s this amazing guy. He has some baggage, but he isn’t a giant douchebag who keeps pushing the heroine, Mackayla, away. He’s so sweet and protective, but still gives off this ridiculous alpha hero aura. I’m kinda swooning on him right now.

The backdrop of this book is a secluded, exotic Island off the coast of Costa Rica, and it makes that whole romance thing a whole lot more...well, romantic! If I close my eyes, I can picture Kellan in a banana leaf loin cloth with glistening tanned skin. He actually wears pants or shorts in the book, but the banana leaf adds a little pizzaz to the hot island sexy times.

Ok, enough about my inappropriate fantasies of a fictional character. This book has all the ingredients of an amazing romantic suspense book. There’s spine tingling action, great characters that you really care about, and decadent love scenes that adds some other tingling, just not in your spine. Wink wink.

Robin Huber hit it out of the park with this book. I gobbled it up in one sitting. I ignored my family, and threw some cereal at them for dinner because I didn’t want to put it down. I really loved the last few chapters. Once the bad guys were taken of, it was so nice to have some page time with Mackayla and Kellan where they didn’t have this heavy weight on their shoulders. It was pure joy seeing what the future held for them. I was swooning...again!
