TWIST OF FATE (HEARTBREAKER BAY #8.5)

When the one you want …

Daisy doesn’t believe love is ever-lasting, so it’s ironic as hell that she parlayed a business degree into a wedding planning business. More ironic still is her latest job bringing her back into contact with the man who’d taught her that love can’t last.

Is the one you can’t have…

To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he’s called home to help the brother he hasn’t seen or spoken to in years, that’s one thing. It’s another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only…

Can love conquer all?

Daisy’s learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they’re together, even when they’re bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was … it’s magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other…?

Liza's Review:

Twist of Fate gives new readers a glimpse into the Heartbreaker Bay series of books from Jill Shalvis. I absolutely adore a reunion romance, and I enjoyed Daisy's and Diego's story.

Daisy and Diego are former high school sweethearts who haven't seen each other in years until Diego comes home to San Francisco for his brother's wedding. Of course none other than the one time love of his life Daisy is the wedding coordinator, and they keep being thrown together to fix many last minutes changes for the wedding.

Twist of Fate hit so many of my happy places. I found myself laughing too many times to count. The romance between Rocco and his fiancé Tyler honestly was almost my favorite part. They were so cute together and I loved they wanted everyone to be as happy as they were together. I liked the reunion between Diego and Daisy, but it seemed to move pretty slowly considering this story was a novella. So much misunderstanding about the past seemed to color a possible future as well. They had a great connection and wonderful chemistry, but needed more communication to really make their relationship move to more than just a physical relationship. I will say once they both started talking and listening to each other, I loved them as a couple.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Heartbreaker Bay series of books and highly recommend them to romance readers who love emotional and funny contemporary romances. Jill Shalvis remains one of my go-to authors for stories filled with happily ever afters.

WUIY high res.jpeg

Wrapped Up in You, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Jill Shalvis.

It’s love. Trust me.

After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporary—schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivy’s reinvented life is on solid ground. And she’s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past she’s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel O’Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers weren’t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.

Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivy’s a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, she’s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivy’s past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything she’s told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivy’s willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Excerpt:
He held her gaze for a long beat before taking the bag and unzipping it, finding the dishes she’d put together for him. “Not tacos,” he said in surprise.

“Making tacos is my job,” she said. “This was for something else.”

     “And what’s that?”

“An apology for being … grumpy last night.”

     “You weren’t.”

She gave him a get real look and he smiled. “Okay, maybe a little. But it was understandable. You’d just gotten an unfortunate and unfair surprise.” He gently tilted her face up to his. “You doing okay this morning?”

     “Yes,” she said. “Of course.”

“Of course,” he repeated and shook his head. “Smart, tough, and resilient,” he murmured, his gaze on her face.

Now it was her turn to smile. “Some might say stubborn, impulsive, and doesn’t know when to quit.”

“Yeah,” he said. “But I find those things very attractive.”

Honestly, she didn’t know how to take half the things he said. They made her feel both terrified and exhilarated at the same time. “You’re a strange man.”

“So I’ve been told.” He looked over the food. “You poison any of it?”

“No, and only because I’d never waste food.” But to prove it, she grabbed the fork she’d packed and took a bite of her eggs. “Mmm,” she moaned before she could stop herself, but hey, she’d worked out and been on the move ever since, and she was starving. Plus, she made damn good eggs if she said so herself.

Again their eyes met, and that now familiar spark went right through her. She wanted him. Quite badly, if going off her racing pulse meant anything. He was so … what, exactly? Steady? Tough? Intense and yet somehow easy-going, not to mention also extremely easy on the eyes?

“You didn’t have to cook something special for me,” he said, sounding touched.

“You helped me last night. I repay my debts.”

“I didn’t do it so you’d feel indebted to me,” he said and cocked his head as he studied her for a beat. “Someday you’re going to have to tell me about the apparent assholes who’ve been in your life to make you so distrusting of me.”

“Oh, don’t flatter yourself. It’s not just you. I don’t trust anyone. And it wasn’t just me paying back a debt,” she admitted. “I wanted to cook for you.” And because that made his smile warm, which in turn made something inside her warm as well, she shrugged and backed up a few steps, needing breathing room. “I also wanted to thank you for your help,” she said, feeling annoyingly awkward as he shoved stacks of plans to one side of the table and started pulling everything else out of her bag with a deep male hum of pleasure when he caught sight of the pancakes.

“Are those blueberry?” he asked very seriously.

     She nodded.

“Fair warning, if they’re as good as the eggs, I really am going to drop to my knees and ask you to marry me.”

That startled a laugh out of her. “Fair warning, if you drop to your knees, I’m going to use my considerable kickboxing skills on you.”

Liza's Review:

Wrapped Up In You is the 8th book in the Heartbreaker Bay series of books from Jill Shalvis. Kel O'Donnell, Caleb's cousin,  and Ivy Snow, taco truck owner, are both pretty guarded individuals thanks to things for each of their pasts. Kel is a by the rules cop in Idaho, while Ivy is finally ending her nomadic lifestyle in San Francisco.

I enjoyed Ivy and Kel's story. While they were pretty opposite in certain things, there was enough alike about them and chemistry between them, for me to keep wanting them to spend more and more time together. They did seem to dance around their attraction way longer than I expected, but it also seemed to work for them as a couple. As with any book by Jill Shalvis, there are moments where I'm laughing out loud one minute, and crying a bit at others. I had wanted Kel's book since forever, and while I still love him, he mad me mad on more than one occasion in Wrapped Up In You. I think because I've always seen him as such a great guy, when he acted what I felt like was out of character, it took a bit for me to get past it.

Honestly while I enjoyed the romance in Wrapped Up In You, the friendships Ivy finally realized she had with all the women in the series gave me all the happy feels. They each had each others backs always and the friendships with the women were every bit as important to Ivy moving forward with a romance as it was to her everyday life. I love how the friendships that develop in a Jill Shalvis book end up being every bit as important to the main characters as the romance.

Wrapped Up In You was a great addition to the Heartbreaker Bay series of books. I love with each new book, we get to spend time with favorite characters from the series and I know I'm going to have an emotional romance that will keep me reading way past my bedtime.

Excerpt:
    “Don’t run off,” he said.

“I don’t like it when people tell me what to do.”

“I get that,” he said. “And same. Also, I try very hard to never tell anyone what to do. But I think we need to finish this.”

Another quiver from deep inside her. “I keep telling you, there’s no this.”

“Are you sure?” Very slowly and carefully, clearly giving her plenty of time to get away if she really wanted, he stepped into her, making her extremely aware that she now stood hemmed in between the alley wall and his body, neither quite touching her.

But she wanted him too. She actually ached to close that last inch between them. She didn’t do it. Instead, she lifted her chin. “I could make you an eunuch right now if I wanted.” The threat was minimalized by the fact that she whispered the threat, but suddenly holding onto her temper was difficult. So was talking. “Don’t think I can’t.”

“I have no doubt,” he said, still holding one of her hands. He took the other as well and squeezed gently. “I think you could probably do anything you set your mind to.”

No one had ever said those words to her, not ever, and when she felt the back of her eyes sting unexpectedly, she closed them in self defense.

    “Sadie.”

    She shook her head.

    “Look at me. Please?”

It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. Caleb had closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.

So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.

“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall. “But that last part might just be in my dreams.”

    “Yes,” she whispered.

“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”
She meant to say yes again, she really did. She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible … craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet …

She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.

Liza's Review:

Playing for Keeps is the newest release from Jill Shalvis in her popular Heartbreaker Bay series. I have to say I was over the moon to get Caleb Parker's book and was a bit surprised to see his heroine was Sadie Lane as they seem like polar opposites.

I've always loved Caleb and couldn't wait to get his story. While I did end up enjoying Playing for Keeps overall, it did seem to take me longer to get into this book than other books in the series. I loved the aspect of Caleb and Sadie co-parenting the dog they rescue and those parts of the book brought so much laughter to the story. However, I continuously felt brought down by the secrets from Sadie's past. It ended up really distracting me a good bit of the time I was reading. I really felt like the secret was much bigger in her mind than in actuality. I guess it bugged me so much as I'm not big on secrets between a committed couple.

Of course neither Caleb nor Sadie would admit to being in a relationship or even having feelings for one another for the longest time. It made me laugh a good bit in the beginning, as they couldn't stay away from each other. I especially laughed out loud when Sadie said the only relationship she was in was with Caleb's shower. They had so many funny, tender and sexy moments together; I was able to get past my few issues with this story.

I will say the fact that Caleb and Sadie both had super interfering families drove me a bit nuts. I thought Caleb's sisters went way too far in trying to protect him. I honestly felt like Sadie's mother was just the biggest witch on earth. I did love seeing her sister step up and finally show Sadie some support at a time when she truly needed it the most.

Overall, Playing for Keeps was a good story, but definitely not my favorite from Jill Shalvis. It took longer for me to connect with the couple than those in prior books. However, once I felt the connection, I ended up really liking Caleb and Sadie together. I did feel like the struggle was worth the payoff at the end, and the additional time with favorite character from the series only made it more enjoyable.
