HIDDEN WATERS (TATTERED & TORN #3)

My family tried to break me. But, somehow, I made it out alive, even though the wounds from that survival are forever carved into my bones. Now, my only wish is for…normal. To know what it’s like to have friends, a job, a home.

The last thing I want is for my new roommate to see the scars I’m so desperate to keep hidden, especially not the ruggedly handsome man who steals my breath and sends my heart into overdrive.

But something tells me that Beckett has demons, too. I see it in the shadows haunting his gorgeous eyes and the way he looks at me with gentle understanding.

As our unlikely friendship becomes so much more, forces from my life slink out of the shadows. And we could both lose everything we’ve fought so hard for—down to our very last breaths…

Nikki’s Review:

I have been dying for Addie’s book since she walked onto the page at the beginning of the series. I knew it was going to be an angsty rollercoaster, and holy hell, was it ever!

I loved the connection that Beckett and Addie had. They’re both lost and dealing with a ton of emotional baggage. They find some much needed peace and friendship with each other, and eventually love. This book was all kinds of swoony and the chemistry was amazing.

Addie is determined to take control of her life and live it to the fullest. Beckett helps her with her bucket list while being a fierce protector. He is one of my favourite kinds of heroes…alpha, but still all soft and mushy on the inside.

You get to visit with the characters from the previous books in the series and see how they’re doing. I love the close knit family dynamic and the friendships are wonderful.

This book has all the ingredients of an amazing romance novel. The suspense is entertaining, but it doesn’t take away from the love story, which is something I like.

Catherine Cowles writes characters that you care about. She puts them through the wringer but she always makes them come full circle and find their HEA. Is it too early to start asking for the next book in the series?

FALLING EMBERS (TATTERED & TORN SERIES #2)

I’ve loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me how to fly. Racing down a mountain and giving me the release I so desperately needed. My understanding. My safe space.

Hadley has fought for a life of her own ever since her sister’s kidnapping. When she was drowning in expectations and family pressures, Calder was always the one who understood her.

Until one night changed it all. From best friends to strangers in a single breath.

She’s like a fire that lives inside me. Even when I thought it was all burned out, there were still embers that lived in my bones.

Calder knows what it’s like to almost lose the people he loves most. He’ll never make that kind of mistake again. Working at the fire station and taking care of his daughters are the only things he needs.

All it takes is a single moment to make him realize how wrong he is. A split second of coming close to losing the woman he has always loved.

But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good…

Nikki's Review:

I always think the current Catherine Cowles book I’m reading is her best yet. Until the next one comes out. So, right now THIS one is her best!

I loved Hadley. She’s spunky, brave, loyal, and strong. But under all these great qualities she’s hurting and vulnerable. She was kinda lost. Calder was floundering just as much, but once they let go to be together  it was like they both felt a bit more balanced. Not perfect, but like they could face the difficult things better because they had each other.

Calder and Hadley had great chemistry. Like scorching chemistry. The I can’t keep my hands off of you kind! Once Calder got his head out of his ass it was on!

Catherine Cowles really digs deep into the intimacy of love and relationships with her characters. Not just the sexy times, but the inner workings of the heart. I always get a well rounded feeling of what’s going on in the characters heads. This book was no exception. As for the writing? I think brilliant is a good word to use. Phenomenal is another one, but I think the best word to describe it is masterpiece.

Excerpt

I pressed on the accelerator to make it past the final rise, and as I did, the property came into view. My heart seemed to take up acrobatics in my chest, flipping and tumbling, expanding and contracting. My hands gripped the wheel harder as my foot eased off the gas.

The house itself was in worse shape than I’d expected. One of the walls had a gaping hole in it. But the small guest cabin didn’t look too worse for wear. The cottage had been in my mom’s family for generations, but the house had been my father’s construction after they married. She hadn’t stayed long after he went to prison, choosing to move us down to the flats to live on some land my uncle owned.

While the generations-old construction of the cabin had held steady, the barn and paddocks hadn’t fared nearly as well. The entire structure seemed to lean to one side, and a storm had taken down more than half of the fencing. My back hurt just looking at all the work that needed to be done.

I sighed and pulled to a stop in front of the cabin, releasing my hold on the wheel. My phone dinged, and I sent up a mental thank you to the gods of technology that it seemed I had service up here.

Shay: Are you there yet? Text me the second you arrive.

I smiled down at my phone, feeling a little less alone, knowing that I had someone who would drop anything to have my back.

Me: Just pulled up outside. Cabin looks okay. The house and barn are a disaster.

Shay: Are you sure you don’t want Brody and me to come help you get settled? We can be there in two days.

God, I was lucky to have her as a friend, but I wasn’t ready to open all the doors I’d need to if they came to stay. There were too many skeletons I didn’t want to let out into the light.

Me: Thank you, but I’ve got this. Let me get settled, and then you can come for a visit.

Shay: I don’t like that you’re there all alone.

Me: I won’t be alone for long.

Soon, I would have this place crawling with animals. It had always been my dream to build a home for neglected or abused animals of any kind. A sanctuary. It was simply coming more quickly than expected.

I turned off my SUV, rolled down the windows, and the pine air swept in. It was different than any other type, the Ponderosa pines. And as it filled me, tears sprang to my eyes. I’d missed this, more than I’d realized.

I leaned back in my seat and pulled out my letter.

Dearest Everly,

I know much of this will come a day late and more than a dollar short, but better that than not at all. Even once the doctors told me the cancer had a hold, I couldn’t bring myself to call you, to tell you these things face-to-face as I should’ve. So, I’ll take the coward’s way out. That won’t be anything new. There were so many times I should’ve stood up but didn’t.

But that’s not you. You’ve always been the bravest person I’ve ever known. Even before that night. I should’ve told you, but I didn’t—I’m so proud of you, beautiful girl. You made yourself into this amazing warrior all on your own, without any help from your dad or me.

I wish I had a chance to truly see you shine now. That’s the price for my sins. To miss all of your beauty and light shining on this world.

This should’ve come so long ago, but I’m sorry. For not being there for you. For not getting your father the help he needed. For not taking you and your siblings away when things went sideways. I’m so very sorry that I wasn’t stronger. That I wasn’t more like you.

I don’t have much I can give you, but the land’s still mine. I know a lot of pain’s been poured into the dirt there, but there was good once, too. When I spent summers there with your grandparents. As your father and I made it our home. The babies that grew there. The animals we raised.

Maybe you can find your good there, too.

I understand if you can’t. Or don’t want to. But I know if one person is strong enough to do it…it’s you.

I love you forever and always, my little warrior.

Mom

A single tear splashed onto the page. She’d been gone before I even knew she was sick. Buried before I even knew she was gone. My family hadn’t wanted me there. Not my brother—who I was sure still blamed me for everything—my uncle, or any other vast network of relatives still rooted in the area.

To them, I was the enemy, the outsider. And now, I’d returned. The only one who might be happy to see me was my cousin, Addie, but I wasn’t even sure about that. We hadn’t spoken since I’d left. All of my letters came back, marked as Return to Sender in her father’s handwriting.

My mother thought I was a warrior, and I hoped she was right. I would need all my armor if I was going to face them again. Because no one would be happy that I was here. And they’d be downright livid when they learned I was staying.

Nikki's Review:

I’m pretty sure I say this after reading every book Catherine Cowles writes, but I REALLY mean it when I say that THIS book is my favourite!!

Oh the angst. I love me some good angst that puts that lump in my throat. This author never fails me when it comes to an emotional rollercoaster. I love it.

Everly is living with the sins of her father. She’s been trying to make up for something that she was in no way at fault for. But the guilt she feels is palpable. Hayes is still living with guilt and trauma from a past event that Everly’s father is to blame for. And cue that angst I love so much! Being together, or even just friends, is difficult, especially for Everly.

I loved the whole dynamic of the small town, Wolf Gap. It gave me a “cozy” feeling and I fell for a lot of the secondary characters. Well, not Everly’s psychotic family, but you get where I’m going here.

The story moved along smoothly, it kept me engaged, and eager to turn the page. I enjoyed all the complex emotions that I could feel coming off of the pages. It’s nice when I can experience a small part of what a character may be feeling.

Honestly, this book had all the ingredients that make me love romance novels. It was the perfect start to new series by an amazing author. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book!

Nikki's Review:

I’m pretty sure I say this with every book in this series, but THIS one is definitely my favourite! There was a sweetness and tenderness that brought me to my knees, but still had that blazing sexiness that I love.

These two characters were so likeable, you really couldn’t help but to cheer for them. They both past traumas and trust issues that made the road bumpy, but the strength of their budding relationship and determination made them push through.

I like vulnerable heroes, and while Mason is strong, and definitely has that “alpha” thing going on, I was able to see that he had so many layers. Anna is a tough cookie, but she also has a tender side that really softened her. I think both of those attributes pulled at Mason.

Catherine Cowles has the ability to write characters that I really care about. They always seem real. The small town, and the friendships made in them, make me want to pick up and find my own real life Sutter Lake.

This book is very character driven, the plot is built around them in a way that you truly get a sense of their thoughts and feelings. Honestly, it was kinda perfect.

NIKKI'S REVIEW:

Contemporary/ Romantic Suspense
4 stars= A

Beneath the Wreckage

Wrecked series Book #5

Release Date: September 21, 2021

Review Copy Provided by the Publisher

This series has captured me from the first page of the first book. I’ve fallen so hard for all of the characters. I love small town romances, and the “homey” feel that comes with them. Catherine Cowles is a master at writing these. I was eager to dive into this latest instalment.

I have wanted Hunter’s book since the beginning. He’s just this great guy that you can’t help but like. He’s everyone’s friend, and an amazing brother. I wanted him to have an equally likeable heroine to make him fall to his knees. That’s where Piper comes in. From the get go these two have great banter, and a friendship quickly develops…and a whole lot of attraction. Isn’t that the best kind of blossoming romances? I think so.

Piper’s story pulled me in right away. The book starts off with a bit of a bang and a tragedy. I seriously wanted to give this girl a big squishy hug.

This book is full of all the things that I love about romance novels. It’s got a character driven plot, amazing chemistry between the hero and heroine, a healthy dose of mystery, and ALL. THE. FEELS. Ms. Cowles is a pro at bringing out every freaking emotion. Do yourself a favour and start this series at the beginning with, Reckless Memories. I mean, they could all be read as stand alone books, but I really think the connection you develop with all of the characters, and their stories, makes the journey through the series just a little bit sweeter.

Prologue

PAST

It burned. Everywhere and nowhere. Slices in my skin that made it feel as if hot lava had been poured into my flesh. I couldn’t count them, had lost track after the tenth. I tried to move, to somehow escape. Only my fingers twitched.

Sounds. Voices. Hovering above me. They were everywhere and yet nowhere. Pinpricks of light, like glimmering stars on the darkest night.

“Miss? Can you hear me?”

I managed a low moan. I only wanted the pain to stop. The agony tearing through my body. I craved a blanket of nothingness. An endless sea where I would cease to exist altogether.

“I’m an EMT. You’re safe. We’ve got you.”

“Hurts.” It was the only message I cared about getting across. This woman might have the power to lessen the burn.

A hand slipped into mine, blood sliding down my arm to bind us together, the liquid already growing tacky with the passage of time.

“I know. Just hold on.”

I didn’t want to hold on. I wanted to float away to a world where none of this was real. Where pain didn’t exist—only light and peace and relief.

“Can you tell us who did this to you?”

My eyes fluttered. My cracked lips parted. I could only manage two words.

“My brother.”

Excerpt

I climbed out of my truck in the parking lot of The General Store. Why was it that I always ended up here? There was just something about the brown-haired beauty who worked at the kitchen inside. Normally, people who shined with that life-is-beautiful kind of positivity made me want to punch something. But with Caelyn, I was fascinated.

I started towards the store when a man called my name. I stiffened and turned, expecting to see a stranger, maybe one of the reporters still holding out hope that I’d share my story with the world. The set of my shoulders eased a bit when I saw that it was Ford Hardy, owner of The Catch Bar & Grill. I said nothing but waited for the man to make his approach. He wasn’t a stranger exactly, but I had no desire for idle chitchat.

“I’ve been hoping to run into you,” he greeted.

I stayed silent.

Ford chuckled. “Not too talkative, are you?”

“Not much to say, I guess.”

Ford’s expression grew serious. “I just wanted to thank you for your help a few months back.”

“I didn’t do anything anyone else wouldn’t do.” Ford had been attacked by someone sick in the head. He’d been jumped from behind and knocked unconscious. I’d just come along at the right time.

“Either way, thank you.” He held out a hand, and I took it for a shake. “Come into the bar sometime. I’ll treat you to a beer and a meal. It’s the least I can do.”

I fought the wince that wanted to surface. The last thing I wanted was to sit around at the island watering hole. People whispered, thinking they were being discreet when they were anything but. Even worse, they sometimes thought it was completely acceptable to approach and ask me a million intrusive questions. “I’ll try and come by.”

Ford grinned. “I’m taking that as a fat chance in hell.”

My lips twitched. “You’re not a stupid man.”

“Thank God for that. Well, if I can ever do anything to repay you, just let me know. My brother’s a contractor. We could give you a couple of days on that house of yours if you’d like.”

My jaw tightened. “I’m good. But thanks for the offer.”

Ford nodded and gave me a wave before heading back towards The Catch. “There’s no expiration date on that.”

I wouldn’t take Ford up on his offer of help unless I got desperate. I needed to do this on my own. I started towards the store. Pulling the creaking screen door open, I walked inside. It was still a bit early, but when 4:00 a.m. was your usual wakeup call, 4:30 p.m. was just about perfect for dinner. Plus, I could avoid the after-work crowd.

I made my way towards the kitchen at the far end of the grocery but stopped in my tracks when I heard Caelyn’s voice.

“Is there any way you could give me more hours? Or more of the bookkeeping to do?”

Mr. Walters, the owner of the store, chuckled. “You’re doing it all already, deary. I barely show up here anymore.”

“Well, do you know of anyone else who might be looking for some help for things I could do from home?” she pressed.

“Are the two jobs you have not enough? You’re gonna work yourself to the bone. And you need to be home for those kids.”

“I know.” Caelyn’s voice seemed to deflate on the words. “But Mia got accepted into this gymnastics program, and it costs an arm and a leg.”

Walters’ voice gentled. “I’d be happy to loan you the fees—”

“No,” Caelyn cut Mr. Walters off. “You’ve done more than enough for us.”

A foreign feeling invaded my chest. A twisting sensation that burned. I’d heard the talk around the island that Caelyn had taken in her three younger siblings after their parents had been involved in some sort of drug bust. I couldn’t imagine taking all that on when she must’ve been barely more than a child herself.

I cleared my throat, stepping around the end of the aisle. Caelyn looked up, the frown marring her gorgeous face quickly turning into a bright smile. “Griffin. It’s good to see you. Have you finally given in to trying one of my salads?”

I gave my head a shake. “I think I’ll stick with the sandwich.”

Walters grinned. “I don’t know, Caelyn can make kale pretty tasty.”

I didn’t try to fight the twisting of my face. “No, thank you.”

Walters chuckled. “Maybe another day. All right, I’m off.” He turned to Caelyn. “You let me know if you change your mind.”

Caelyn reached up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips to the old man’s cheek. “Thank you.”

Walters headed out of the store, and just Caelyn and I were left. I slid onto a stool at the counter. It was rare that I waited here for my food, but I couldn’t seem to resist the temptation today. I had this undeniable urge to make sure she was okay.

“So, what’ll it be? Some version of meat and cheese?”

I almost chuckled. Almost. “Sounds good to me. But I know you’ll sneak some vegetables on there somehow.”

“Gotta keep you from getting scurvy.”

I almost choked. “I thought that was from not enough vitamin C. I drink my orange juice.”

Caelyn shook her head and started pulling things out of a fridge below the counter. “There’s vitamin C in vegetables, too. And lots of other nutritious things you need.”

“Good thing I come in here a few times a week then.”

“Good thing.”

An idea was forming in the back of my mind. One that just might be the answer to helping Caelyn out of her predicament and giving me some nice benefits, as well.

The screen door banged open. “Cae Cae!” a young girl’s voice called out. Soon, there was a flash of movement past me.

Caelyn stepped around the counter and lifted the little girl into her arms as she hurled herself at Caelyn. “How was your day?”

“So good. I taught cartwheels at recess, and you left me my favorite cookie in my lunch.”

Caelyn laughed. “Sounds like a good day to me. Where are the rest of the tiny terrors?”

The little girl beamed up at Caelyn. “They’re coming, but they were being too slow, so I ran when I got to the parking lot.” Her gaze caught on me. “Whoa. Are you a giant?”

I wanted to laugh but seeing the easy affection between the girl and Caelyn stole my ability to speak.

“Mia, this is Mr. Griffin. Griffin, this is my little sister, Mia.”

The girl looked so much like Beth had at that age, I struggled to find words. “It’s nice to meet you, Mia.” My voice came out rougher than before, and I tried to force my lips into a smile, but the action felt foreign.

“Hey, sis,” a male voice called.

I turned to see a boy who looked to be about sixteen or seventeen. As soon as he caught sight of me, wariness filled his features. He quickly crossed to his sisters, tugging another girl behind him. “Who’s this?”

Caelyn pressed her lips together as if holding back a laugh. “This is Mr. Griffin. Griffin, this is Will and Ava, my other two siblings. I hope you don’t mind, but they usually hang with me for thirty minutes before Molly takes over. Kids, you can go hang out in the office while I get Mr. Griffin’s sandwich ready.”

“I wanna stay with you and help,” Mia whined.

“I’ll go into the office,” Ava offered. She had taken a step behind her brother as if hiding from me.

“They can stay.” The words were out before I could stop them. Awkward and a little gruff, but Mia beamed.

“See, Mr. Griffin wants me to help make his sandwich.”

Caelyn shook her head. “Well, if that’s the case, we better wash our hands.”

Ava headed for the back office while Will took a seat next to me at the counter, eyeing me carefully. Caelyn helped Mia up onto a little stool by the sink, and they washed their hands, Mia singing some sort of song that counted off the seconds.

“All clean,” she called. “No germies can last to thirty.”

I couldn’t hold in my chuckle this time. “I guess they can’t.”

“I never thought I’d see the day,” Caelyn started, putting a hand over her heart. “I do believe you laughed, Griffin Lockwood. Who knew all it took was a seven-year-old singing about germs?”

Nikki's Review:

Sigh. This is one has ALL. THE. FEELS.  Have you ever wanted to hug a fictional character? I wanted to wrap Griffin and Caelyn up in wool.

We’ve had glimpses of Griffin in previous books in the series. There’s always this sense of mystery surrounding him. He’s all sorts of broody. My favourite kind of hero! Caelyn has tons of baggage of her own. I love how these two find a solid friendship while building something more intimate.

This is a slow burn romance, but the sexual tension is palpable. They’re both fighting their need, and want, for each other. But that made the fall all the more sweeter.

I love this author’s small town romance series. The character development is always strong, and it always drives the story. This book is no exception. I was totally invested. It was great that characters from previous books played a prominent role. You end up really caring about what happens to them, and where their stories go beyond their book.

Wrecked Palace is the kind of book that you snuggle up with, and you won’t want to put it down until the end. If you’re anything like me, you’ll get some serious warm and fuzzies.

This book could be read as a standalone, but I think for the best enjoyment you should start with the first book, Reckless Memories. I think getting to the know the characters is such a huge part of what makes this series so amazing. Plus, all the heroes in this series are uber yummy!
