MEET THE EXTRASENSORY AGENTS

The Lure of the Origin Story
by
Leslie A. Kelly

Throughout my entire writing career, there has been one series that has always held the biggest place in my heart. Although I had a lot of fun writing sexy, funny contemporary romances for Harlequin, and was thrilled to explore darker suspense in my Black CATs and Veronica Sloan series’, my Extrasensory Agents books were always my favorite. I think it’s because they suited my need to write very dark, dangerous stories but with people I personally liked so much.

Olivia Wainwright, of COLD TOUCH, was such a wonderful heroine to write, but her dark gift needed some balance. Pairing her up with down-to-earth southern cop Gabe Cooper allowed her to see some light in the darkness. Aidan McConnell, from COLD SIGHT was a complete loner, reclusive and grumbly, until a feisty reporter drew him out. Mick Tanner of COLD MEMORY is probably my favorite kind of hero—a sexy playboy—but his weird ability requires him to wear gloves at all times, and keeps him removed from the world. At least until an old flame draws him back into it. And sultry, surly Derek from COLD IMAGE walks through a world of death every single day, and isn’t sure how to make a life for himself within it, until a brainy doctor teaches him a thing or two.
All of those agents got their full books…but we met them after they were already a team. I have thought a lot about the popularity of origin stories in books and movies—I love them myself. And I had already written a very short story for Aidan, many years ago, showing how he met Julia. I did another one later, for Olivia, which was included as bonus material in her book.
But they weren’t the only agents. What about the rest? Dark Derek and sexy Mick? What about Julia herself? I wanted to find out how these smart, talented people got together.
I just had to know. So, I went back to the very beginning and found out. I am so happy to be releasing MEET THE EXTRASENSORY AGENTS. It is a collection of five short stories, ranging from about 12-20 pages. Each one focuses on an individual member of the team, revealing the actual moment when they made the decision to get involved with this dark, paranormal investigative agency.
Of course, it all had to start with Julia. Brilliant, sexy, strong, in-your-face Julia, who is madly in love with a ghost.
Readers have been asking for Julia’s story for years. I was never sure I could do her and Morgan Raines justice. But going back into this world to create these stories for all the characters reopened that door of creativity within me. And I can very happily say that Julia IS going to get her story…in just a few months! And if you read MEET THE EXTRASENSORY AGENTS, you’re going to get a sneak preview of it!
In the meantime, though, I hope readers enjoy seeing the origins of this unique team. I certainly loved going back into each character’s perspective and I think I recaptured their unique voices and views. That’s the hope, anyway!

Liza's Review:

Leslie Kelly has been an auto-buy author for me from the moment I read her very first book. I love her sexy contemporary romances, but when she switched over to romantic suspense, I knew she had found her true voice. Add in the paranormal and thriller elements of her Extrasensory Agents series, and her books are golden.

I've wanted Derek's book pretty much from the moment he first appeared on the page. Each of the Extrasensory Agents have a different gift and Derek's is that he can see how people were murdered, and his talent is needed to help solve the case of missing boys at an exclusive academy in Georgia. Enter Dr. Kate Lincoln, who's brother Oliver has been missing from the same academy for six months, and Kate needs Derek's help to figure out what happened to him.

The suspense/thriller elements were very strong in Cold Image. I actually had to put it down a few time when reading late at night so I could sleep through the night. Ms. Kelly has a wonderfully twisted mind when it comes to writing suspense, and I love every moment of it. I also loved that with Cold Image, we had more romance than in some of the earlier books. The romance has always been a part of the story, but with Kate and Derek it was more prevalent. I really found myself falling for Derek and Kate as a couple. I liked the Kate seemed to get Derek in a way no one else really did.

I'll put it out there right now. I usually have the who-done-it all figured out very early on in a book. I wasn't completely right in my guess this time, but I think it is because there were so many horrible people to pick from in this book. Seriously there were really only a couple people at the academy I didn't want to be eaten by the alligators in the swampy area.

Cold Image was a wonderful addition to the Extrasensory Agents series. I've been hooked on this series since I read the very first book and impatiently await the release of each new book in this series. I highly recommend Cold Image and the entire Extrasensory Agents series to readers who love paranormal romantic suspense books with thriller elements.

Excerpt from COLD IMAGE by Leslie A. Kelly

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“You know I see violent deaths, right?”
“I know you see ghosts.”
He shook his head. “Not ghosts. I’ve never seen a ghost.”
She looked up at him, her brow furrowed. “Now I really don’t get it.”
He’d explained this so many times, to so many people and knew the easiest way to make them understand. “Imagine somebody taking an old black-and-white video camera and recording the last few minutes of someone’s violent death. It’s then set to replay on a loop, over and over, at the spot where it happened.” Well, usually at the spot. There had been a few occasions when it had been an object holding the imprint. That had happened last fall, when they were investigating some murders at a carnival in north Florida.
It took a second, then came the gasp. “Wait, you see victims reenacting their murders?”
“Not always murder. Sometimes it’s deadly accidents. Suicides. And they’re not reliving it—like I said, I don’t see ghosts.”
“Then what are they?”
“I call them death imprints. Like something stamped on a spot and repeating for eternity, long after the soul or spirit of the person is gone.”
“Eternity….” She sounded horrified.
Frankly, so was he. He wondered if the images ever faded away. He’d never seen evidence of that, but hoped someday his parents would stop being brutally murdered.
“How awful. Constant death. Every death.
“Not every death, only the violent ones. They leave a mark, and I see it.”
“All of it,” she pressed.
He nodded once, knowing how carefully she watched him, though her face was shadowed by the trees.
“I can’t believe you don’t live on a deserted island. Savannah—God, a city that old?”
“I avoid certain areas.” Particularly the dangerous ones with long, ugly pasts. As she’d pointed out, in a city so old, there were lots of those. Lots of opportunities to be startled out of a regular day by walking into the path of a mob hit from Prohibition days, or shootouts with bank robbers, or innocent victims dragged into back alleys.
“I imagine you have a mental map of where it’s safe to visit.”
“Oh yeah,” he said, glad she got it and he didn’t have to explain much.
“That’s a wise thing to do. Your mind probably can’t handle the constant barrage.”
“You shrinking me, Doc?”
“No. I’m trying to put myself in your place.”
He didn’t know anybody who could do that. His Aunt Beth’s ability was minor, just a glimmer here and there. Fortunately, his Dad had known what his sister could do, and had, one night while drunk, told his buddy Abe. That was why his pseudo-uncle had trusted him, believing Derek about what he saw in Dad’s office. Abe had pressured the cops until they did a proper investigation and acknowledged the scene was a double-murder, not a murder-suicide.
A thug his father had prosecuted, and two accomplices, had been responsible for the crime. His dad’s name had been cleared. Some comfort for an orphaned twelve-year old, he supposed.
“Is there anywhere you can go in the city?”
“I know which streets are safe to walk on.” And which weren’t. “I avoid the intersection at Skidaway Road and Victory Drive—lots of car accidents there.” Bodies flung through windshields, pedestrians hit by buses. “There’s a block on Bryant Street I steer clear of, too. A banker took a high-dive from a ninth floor roof. He almost landed on my head the first time.”
He tried to shrug, as if it were routine. In truth, though, he never got completely accustomed to it, especially when he saw something new, though there wasn’t much he hadn’t experienced by now. Well, maybe an official prison execution, though he’d certainly seen his fair share of hangings, almost always self-inflicted.
A painful visual immediately surfaced. He shoved it away, back into the deepest recesses of his mind where the grief over his parents still lingered.
She gasped, suddenly realized something he’d hoped she wouldn’t grasp for a while. “Oh my God, this place is going to be very bad for you, isn’t it?” she asked as they reached the center of the woods, where the ground was marshiest and little light shone through.
“Probably.”
“I wasn’t thinking so far ahead. I thought you saw the occasional ghost. But you will see every horrible death that ever happened here!”
He didn’t reply, silently acknowledging that fact.
“For you to come to a former asylum…from the days when the treatments were barbaric and dangerous,” she said in a broken whisper. “Why did you agree?”
“It’s my job.”
True, but there was a lot more to it, including his own need to pay debts owed to the dead, as he’d once paid his parents’. “Plus, I’ve worked in hospitals before.”
“But here! This is different. There was no care or therapy in those days. This was simply a place for people to dump their unstable relatives and forget about them.”
“Don’t forget the unwanted wives,” he growled, remembering some of what he’d uncovered doing more research last night. There’d been a famous case some decades ago when a millionaire had accused his wife of “hysteria” and had her committed here. She’d died a suspicious death not long afterward, and he’d married his mistress a month later.
He wondered briefly if the wife had been the blonde, but quickly realized she hadn’t been. He’d seen grainy old newspaper pictures of her. She was dark-haired, with sad, dark eyes. Still, her fate could certainly have been the same as the woman he’d just watch die.
“Oh, God, and tuberculosis!” she exclaimed, her hand on her mouth. “It’s so ugly.”
Yeah. He’d researched that disease, too. Natural deaths were one thing. Choking because your own lungs are useless and fluid-filled? Well, it wasn’t exactly a peaceful way to go.
“Oh, Jesus, somebody else should do this, not you.”
She sounded so horrified, so remorseful for not having known the possible ramifications, he had to put a hand on her chin and lift her face. “It’s okay. I’ll be fine.”
“No, you won’t. I know how brains work, I know about repressed memories, how witnessing shock and trauma damage a person. You are not okay, and this place will make you less okay.”
What luck to land with a clinical psychiatrist who could so easily analyze him and put her finger right on the truth of what he did and what it did to him. He so didn’t need to have this conversation right now.
“Look, you were right there while I watched a woman being strangled to death, and I got through it.”
Grimacing as he revealed another detail of the brutal attack he’d witnessed, she twisted her long, elegant fingers into knots. “I am so sorry I dragged you into this.”
He eyed her, knowing she meant it…but not entirely. “If it means you finally get answers about your brother, it’ll be worth it though, right?”
Her teeth caught her bottom lip. Finally she nodded. “Worth it for me, yes. I don’t suppose it’s ever worth it for you.”
“Sure it is.” He thrust off the thoughts of all he’d seen, all the murders from so long ago there was no way he could help resolve them. But he’d seen the most important one, the one that had put him on this deadly path.
His parents murders had been solved, the killers incarcerated. So yeah. It was worth it.
“And you pray for them?” she whispered.
He nodded. He’d never really talked about that before; honestly, he wasn’t sure he’d done it aloud in front of anyone before, his final condolences often a whisper in his mind. She just made him feel at ease enough to pray for the poor, lost woman aloud.
“Next time,” she whispered, her eyes gleaming with emotion, “I’ll pray with you.”

COLD MEMORY REVIEW

Meet the Extrasensory Agents...A team of hot psychics who can solve the coldest of crimes!

Mick Tanner's ability to touch an item and know its entire history made him a hit in the sideshow, but has made personal relationships difficult. Chief of Police Gypsy Bell remembers Mick as a smug pain-in-the-ass, but he's grown up to be a very sexy, fascinating man. And like it or not, she needs his help to figure out the mystery that's plaguing her tiny town. Because this killer has a plan, a motive, and several targets. He's out to right a wrong...no matter how many people he has to kill to do it.

Liza’s Review:

I've loved Leslie Kelly's books since I first discovered her writing. I adore her sexy romances, but truly believe she found her voice when she started writing her darker paranormal romance/romantic suspense books. Seriously her Black CATs and Extrasensory Agents books keep me on the edge of my seat while reading and even awake at night as I don't want to stop reading until I know everything that has happened. Cold Memory is absolutely another winner in the Extrasensory Agents series.

First let me just say finding out Mick's history with his grandfather had me crying like a freaking baby. It's not very often I want to throat-punch a character, but I wanted to throat-punch his grandfather. His abuse of an innocent child had me ready to kill a fictional character, and I can only remember that happening with one character before in another series.

I love that Mick and Gypsy had known each other as kids. No they really weren't friends growing up, but because they had both been around the carnival, they understood the lifestyle and how to work to solve the mystery before someone they both love is a victim. I liked that Gypsy and Mick both gave each other crap from childhood even as adults. However, I absolutely loved how Gypsy went out of her way to be in Mick's environment without causing him issues later. Mick's touch ability has always kept him from letting too many people into his home and his life. I loved that Gypsy thought of ways to keep Mick's home safe from her presences as much as possible. I absolutely loved seeing Mick and Gypsy grow closer and finally act on the attraction that had been building between them from the moment they saw each other again.

I'm usually pretty good about figuring out the who-done-it in a romantic suspense. I will say I figured out the why long before I figured out the whom. With each new murder it was easier and easier to see a connection between the characters. I was very surprised with the death of a character that had nothing to do with the other murders occurred. I understood it needed to happen, but I had really come to like this character, so it broke my heart to witness that death.

Ms. Kelly kept me on the edge of my seat pretty much from the start of Cold Memory. It had all the elements of a great romance, with the addition of paranormal elements and suspense, which I absolutely adore. I'm so glad to see we will get more books in the Extrasensory Agents series in the future and am still hoping for one particular character's story. I highly recommend Cold Memory to all readers who love romances with strong paranormal and suspenseful elements.

Liza’s Review:

I've loved Leslie Kelly's books since I first read her Harlequins years ago. When she originally published the Black CATs and Extrasensory Agents books under the name Leslie Parrish, I feel in love with her much darker voice.  I loved the Black CATs books and have said repeatedly I want more. I also love her Extrasensory Agents books and loved Cold Sight, the first book in the series. That being said, I really think Cold Touch is my favorite darker Leslie Kelly book ever.

I loved both of the main characters so much. Olivia's "gift" give me chills. I can't imagine willingly touching a dead body to experience the last 2 minutes and 10 seconds of that person's life to see how they died. Gabe is so protective of everyone around him. He and Olivia are attracted to one another from their very first meeting. Once Gabe realized he had real feelings for Olivia, his protection mode went into overdrive.

I also loved Gabe's partner Ty and Olivia's co-workers and her sister. In fact, I would love to see some of the secondary characters get books in the future. I don't want to post any spoilers about this book. I can only say I felt so many different emotions as I read this story. I cheered Olivia and Gabe on from the very beginning. I laughed out loud a few times, and cried like a baby at other times. I really thought I had the bad guy figured out with about 100 pages left, but was off the mark. I love that Leslie kept me guessing and I still had to wait for the reveal.

Cold Touch is one of the best books I've read all year. It is filled with suspense, action, and romance. I personally and hoping and praying we get more books in this series from Leslie Kelly in the future!
