HAUNTED BLADE SPOTLIGHT

Haunted Blade
Author: J.C. Daniels
Series: Colbana Files #6
Release Date: October 1, 2017

Haunted, Hunted…*Harassed*.

Never let it be said that Kit Colbana had ever been given the easy road. Or
even the semi-paved road. Only weeks after dealing with the mysterious—and
murderous—being called Puck, she’s got another killer on her hands. Perhaps
even two.

Some of the bodies turning up bring up haunting memories of a past she
longs to forget, but as always, that past is chasing her at her heels, like
a hated shadow.

As the body count racks up, there’s an imbalance of power, particularly
among the vampire population, and Kit must yet again deal with ugly
memories as one of the monsters who tried to break her is set free to deal
with the imbalance of power. Yet while a power struggle rages in East
Orlando, there’s another, more subtle battle taking place and Kit feels
like the center of it all.

Arrogant? Maybe. But the dead bodies don’t bear the mark of her
grandmother’s pet killer by sheer coincidence…and she doubts her nemesis
being released is either.

Excerpt:

“You’re trying to distract me.” I tugged my shirt down only to realize at
some point, he’d already gotten my bra unfastened. Swearing, I adjusted
that and moved so that the table now separated us. “Not funny, Damon.”

“I wasn’t trying to be funny.” He tugged at his jeans and went to stretch
out on the couch, watching me with heavy lidded eyes.

So he was hiding something—and it was a wasted effort because I knew what
it was.

“I already know you met with Malcolm. And apparently, you’re
distracted—that makes me think you’re worried about something,” I said,
pacing closer to him. “Or you’d figure out how I know.”

His nostrils flared and his body tensed.

He didn’t move from that lazy, slumped position, but his lids lifted and
the dark pupils of his eyes flared, darkening his deep gray eyes to near
black. “You’ve talked to him…and Marie. Both in one day. I didn’t know
you even knew them. Ambitious, kitten. You investigating me again?”

I curled my lip at him. “Funny.”

“I’m not laughing.” He reached up and caught the front of my jeans, tugging
hard enough that he pulled me off balance and I ended up falling onto his
lap.

He wrapped both arms around me, holding me tight even when I tried to
wiggle into a less-awkward position.

“Damn it, you’re a caveman, sometimes,” I said, jabbing him into the gut
and twisting around until I was somewhat comfortable. He relented and
loosened his grip, letting me sit straddling his lap. “For the record, *I *am
not laughing either.”

Jabbing him in the chest, I added, “No, I’m not investigating you, you dumb
ass. He’s telling me that he wants me to do a job—says there’s a blade he
wants me to find.”

Damon blinked, the action so slow it was almost comical. He did it a second
time, this just simply closed his eyes and shook his head.

“You’re not taking the job,” he said after almost a full minute of silence.

I gave him a withering look. “You’d do better to reword that, pal, because
if I even *thought* you were trying to dictate how I could work and who I
could work for, the two of us would be having the fight to end all fights,
right before I kicked your ass out of my apartment, for like…*forever*.”

But if I expected those words to bring about any apology, clearly, I was
mistaken.

Slowly, in a move that somehow conveyed all the power in his big body,
Damon rose to his feet. His hands hung loose at his sides as he studied
me, head cocked. “If Marie was here talking to you, and if you’ve been
talking to Malcolm, I’m assuming you’ve already figured out a crucial
detail.”

“Just what detail is that, big guy?” I asked, chin going up.

“The prick is dangerous.”

“Newsflash—I knew that quite some time ago. I didn’t need to talk to
Marie, *or* him, to figure that out. I steer clear of him anyway.”

Stalking close, Damon reached out and hooked his hand around my neck,
drawing me to my toes as he hipped his head. “Then why are we having a
problem here?”

I bit his lower lip, using that as a distraction. It almost worked.

The knee I tried to drive up between his knees worked better.

Still, between the two, I was able to twist away from him and evade his
grasp as I moved farther away. As he turned toward me, blood welling on
his lip, I held up a staying hand. “We’re about to have even bigger
problems if you don’t calm the hell down,” I warned him.

He held his position, watching me with glittering eyes as he swiped the
back of his hand over his mouth. The small smear of blood that remained, he
cleared with a flick of his tongue. “We’re going to have a reckoning about
this soon enough, you got that?”

“I’m scared.” I curled my lip at him, mostly to piss him off—I was plenty
pissed myself. “Do you honestly think I’m stupid enough to work for him?
He’s either fae or an ancient—or both—and you think I’m *that *crazy, even
after what went down with Puck?”

Damon’s brows shot up, then slowly, his face relaxed. “You know what he
is.”

“Please.” Smoothing my shirt down, I tried to settle myself, but the anger
buzzing off him was taking on an erotic edge and that was affecting me in
very, very un*settling* ways. “Give me some credit. I realize I haven’t
been around the block as many times as you have, old man, but I’m not
exactly an idiot.”

He rocked back on his heels, still eying me narrowly. “Since you know what
he is and you’ve already said you don’t plan to work for him…what’s the
problem?”

“You!” Huffing out a breath, I crossed my arms over my chest. “You big
ass, you *don’t* get to tell me what I can and can’t do! You’re not *my*
alpha! You’re not my sugar daddy, my boss or my master. I love you, Damon,
but you don’t get to *control* me—I don’t obey your orders but you think
you can growl and snarl at me and I’ll meekly obey, after all this time?”

Colbana Files #4

I'm a huge fan of the Colbana Files books from J.C. Daniels. I was so excited to get a chance to read Edged Blade early, as I couldn't wait to see what happened next with Kit.

I have to say that Edged Blade was a tough read for me. While I loved the time we got to spend with Kit and Damon, and even Kit and Justin, I never really connected with the rest of the story. I honestly felt like this book was a little all over the place. I can understand setting the series up for future events, and I'm guessing that is what was going on with the case Justin convinced Kit to work with him on. However, there was so much jumping around with the story and the locations I felt like my head was spinning at times and I had to go back and re-read parts to make sure I understood what had just happened.

Edged Blade cannot be read as a stand-alone book. In fact, if you haven't read the first 3 books in this series, you would be totally lost as to what Kit is recovering from and why she is so different. I've loved all the other books in this series, even when the story made me bawl my eyes out. Edged Blade had much potential, but ended up being just so-so for me. I hope the story arc that started in Edged Blade is explained more in the next book in the series.

Broken Blade (Colbana Files)

Broken Blade is the newest release in the Colbana Files series from J. C. Daniels. The release date was January 6, 2014. From the back cover.~

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken. She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn’t taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic…one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.

If she survives the job, she won’t be the same…and neither will those closest to her.

I was super lucky to get a review copy thanks to the author through NetGalley. This is one of my favorite series ever and after reading Blade Song, I needed to read Broken Blade. Let me just say right now, it was awesome!

I'm warning you up front, while I loved this book, it is just as emotional a read as Blade Song was...i.e. have tissues handy or a friend to text you through the tough spots.

Kit Colbana is one of my favorite characters ever. She is way stronger than even she realizes. I get why she was hiding out at the beginning of this book, but was so glad to see glimpses of the Kit I've come to know and love as the story progressed. I'm a romantic at heart, so I want Kit and Damon back together now! I understand Kit needs to heal, recover, and find herself again, but that doesn't keep me from wanting everything to be perfect now.

There is so much that goes on in this world with each book, I feel as if I will give tons of spoilers away if I say too much. I will say the world building that happens in each book just gets better and better. I love getting to find out something new about at least one character in every single book. Even with Kit not back to fully being herself in this book, I still loved watching her start to fight to come back.

The Kit Colbana series is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series out at this time...maybe even of all the UF series I read. I can't wait to see where Ms. Daniels takes this series with the next book.

Excerpt 1

Damon.
My heart raced. It had been three weeks since I’d seen him. It seemed like longer. But it wasn’t long enough. I couldn’t—
The door opened. My hand convulsed on the water and the plastic crumpled. Lowering my gaze, I stared at the water and sighed. Dumping it in the recycler, I dried my hands off. I was surprised to see they weren’t shaking. That was nice, I thought. At least I could face him without showing how much of a mess I was.
He’d know, of course.
Damon always knew.
My heart bumped against my ribs as I turned around and saw him standing in the door. His hair had grown out longer than I’d ever seen it, maybe even close to an inch all over. Eyes the color of thunderheads stared at me as I stood there. A muscle pulsed in his jaw.
The silence was weighted, a heavy burden settling on my shoulders as I fought the urge to back away. Run. Hide.
Nearly a month had passed since he’d barreled his way through the wards at TJ’s. An eternity seemed to stretch out between us, words hung unspoken, the pain in my heart, in my soul, so vivid and all consuming, it all but doubled me over.
Doyle was the one to shatter it. “Kit needs some information on somebody in the Clan.”
Damon shot me a look and then focused on Doyle. “What for?”
“Work.”
Damon looked back at me, taking in the gun, the K-bar strapped to my thigh and although he didn’t say anything, I suspected he was fully aware of the fact that I was pretty much loaded for bear. His gaze dropped to my belt—at least that was what I figured he was looking at, although some part of me, the part that wasn’t instinctively cowering in fear, felt a warm, shivery little tingle spark, then spread. I rested my hand on my belt and stroked the silver wire of the garrote, needing something to ground myself.
“You looking to kill one of my cats, kitten?”

Excerpt 2

“I don’t like that woman, Damon. I don’t like her at all.”
A muscle in his jaw pulsed. “She’s a bitch, but the clan doesn’t exactly give out phone numbers just because a human girl calls up looking for one.”
“And what about when your girlfriend calls to talk to you after a fight?” I don’t know if I’d meant to talk about that or not. But the words ripped out of me and…and they were justthere. Thrown out like a sucker-punch and now they hung between us like an ugly, red stain.
Silence struck, heavy and weighted, crackling with more tension that I could stand.
Damon came off the couch in a smooth, controlled motion, his eyes locked on my face and everything inside him seemed…quiet.
Too quiet. All of that caged, restless energy was sucked down and he just stared at me, unblinking. It was damned unnerving.
Seconds ticked by and finally, he said softly, “What did you just say?”
