CONSUMED: A NOVEL

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family's scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.
Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...
By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.
Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.
Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.
Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. Contemporary Romance

Liza's Review:

Consumed is the first book in the exciting new contemporary series featuring firefighters from J.R. Ward. I honestly can say it was a roller coaster ride from start to finish and I enjoyed the ride immensely.

Anne Ashburn and Danny McGuire are both such strong characters. They each are so strong in their own right, I worried there would be no give and take when it came to them, but they also each had their weaknesses, that helped to balance them out. Ward threw a major curveball into both character's lives in the beginning of this book and I found myself being unable to put down the book so I could find out where she would take us on this wild ride.

There was plenty of chemistry between Anne and Danny, and while I really enjoyed the romance between them, I was totally and completely pulled in by the mystery of the serial arsonist. I had in my mind who was behind part of it, and was totally blown away when I found out I was so off base. I love when a writer keeps me guessing and Ward did an amazing job with keeping the reader guessing in Consumed.

I feel like Consumed was just the set up for a new series of books from J.R. Ward and have to say I'd be pretty excited to get another series of books from Ward. I adore her Black Dagger Brotherhood series, which is a paranormal/urban fantasy series. I have enjoyed her contemporary books in the past and am excited to see where she takes all the characters from Consumed in future books.

Sugar Lake #1
Contemporary Romance

Liza's Review:

As Good As The First Time is the first book in the Sugar Lake series of books from K.M. Jackson. If you are a fan of reunion romances or second chance romances, I can highly recommend this book.

Olivia Gale is the more "together" one of her siblings. Her brother is still finding himself and her sister Drea is still figuring out her talents and work goals. When Olivia is fired from what seemed to be her dream job, it happens at the perfect time to go back to Sugar Lake to help her aunt out with the family bakery. I loved that Olivia always baked to relax, and she was so quick to jump in to help her family. I also absolutely loved that her younger sister Drea surprised her by going with her, as I couldn't wait to see how the sister's relationship would change during the trip. Olivia appears to be super serious while Drea is more sassy and fun-loving when we first meet them.

Olivia knows when she returns to Sugar Lake it is possible she will run into her teenage love Clayton Morris, but totally isn't prepared for him to not only be there, but living next door with his young daughter. I have to say I really liked that Liv and Clay slowly reconnected. Liv had to get past her anger and listen to Clay's reason for distancing himself from her and eventually breaking her heart. I could totally feel the connection and chemistry between Liv and Clay from the moment they first saw each other again. I had all the feels for this couple as I read their reunion story.

While I loved the slowly building romance in this book, I have to say I loved the relationship building of Olivia, Drea and their cousins every bit as much. Olivia and Drea really have never been close, yet the more time they spent together the more they seemed to get each other. I love that the relationship between the sisters really seemed to be every bit as important to their character development as the romance between Olivia and Clay. Maybe because I have a sister and a brother the sibling relationships were just as important to me.

Olivia takes her time really figuring out where she belongs in the world. I honestly felt like it was just part of who she was to try everything before finally listening to her heart and going that route. I figured out at the very start of this story she was a baker at heart, but I loved her path to figure it out for herself. I also loved getting a glimpse of what Drea can become in this book. I can't wait to see how her character develops in future books.

As Good as the First Time was a wonderful story. I'm a big fan of finding books in a series early so I can read them in order. I can't wait to see where K.M Jackson takes the characters from this series in future books. I already have several favorites, and I hope they each get their own story along the way.

COCKSURE (COCHRANS OF COKER COUNTY #1)

Sabrina

He’s the cockiest bastard I’ve ever met and I mean that with all the affection and adoration in the world. I’ve been in love with him for years, and not just because of those intense blue eyes or that slow smug smile that promises to make all your dreams come true. I’ve seen what lies under that smile and his cocksure attitude. It’s enough to make me melt.

Not that I’d ever let him know. Not only is Luke Cochran one of Hollywood’s up-and-coming movie stars…he’s also my boss. I’m his personal assistant and have seen all the women who come and go in his life.

I don’t even hold a candle. But a girl can dream…right?

Luke

Sabrina is one of the sharpest, funniest, kindest people I’ve ever met. Sometimes, I think I’m taking advantage of her, but I seriously cannot cope with my hectic lifestyle without her to keep me on track.

Of course, my life just got totally knocked off track. One of my sisters called. They need me back home. My mother is sick and the last thing I can think about is the promotional tour I’ve got coming up.

Sabrina’s coming with me. She’s the only person who can keep me focused and centered in a time like this. Besides, my family adores her. And it’s just a quick visit. My mother is tough. She’ll be alright.

But then something happens that knocks me for a loop and when my mother tells me that all she really wants in life is to see her kids happy and settled down, I do the stupidest damn thing ever and announce that Sabrina and I are in love. Now I’ve just got to convince my best friend to play along with me and act like she’s my fiancée and we’re stupid in love.

No big deal…right?

Cochrans of Cocker County #1

Liza's Review:

Cocksure is the first book in the Cochrans of Cocker County series from Shiloh Walker. Luke Cochran and Sabrina have pretty much been best friends since she first became his personal assistant. She is the reason he started spending time with is family again actually. They have such a strong friendship, and of course Luke has no idea that Sabrina has been in love with him for years.

I absolutely adored Sabrina. She is such a strong character and has put up with so much crap while working for Luke. When he tells his mom they are engaged, she has to put up with even more crap because of Luke's fans and everyone's questions about their relationship. I loved how much Luke respected Sabrina, but it really bothered me that he had never really seen her as more than his assistant for all those years. Hello, they had worked together for 5 years, and suddenly he finally sees how hot she is?!?! I also had major issues with Luke implying over and over about something happening to him at some point in his childhood, but never having the guts to voice it; even to Sabrina.

I really did love Luke and Sabrina as a couple and loved they each understood each other in a way no one else did. I was glad when Luke finally shared his past with her and could start to see he did nothing wrong all those years ago. I felt like Luke finally sharing that part of himself was the step in the right direction for them to have a real relationship. I really loved watching Luke realize how much he had loved Sabrina all along. Yes their new physical relationship was pretty smoking hot, but I think they worked faster for me because they really were friends first.

Cocksure was a really good start to this new series from Shiloh Walker. I liked meeting Luke's siblings and really do hope she continues writing in this series. While I had to laugh that this story sprung up from all the hoopla over "cocky-gate" this summer, I truly forgot it had anything to do with it very soon after I started reading the book. It is a great example of Ms. Walker's voice and I think fans of contemporary romance will really enjoy this book.

Chapter One

Liam's completion of flight training had rather fortuitous timing. Liam was one of the members of Lex's security team before Darren moved in. Darren snagged the other Lycan on the way to the airport with the subtle threat to "move your ass and don't breathe a word to anyone." Darren looked out the window of the Konstantine jet and didn't see ocean, but he didn't know how close they were to Dublin Airport.
Reading Liam's thoughts would have been easy enough, if Darren hadn't happily discovered that he could block that ability. So, he hadn't been subjected to the "have you lost your fucking mind" lecture that Liam likely received from Lex. Or the "you let anything happen to him, I'll kill you, myself" that undoubtedly followed said lecture.
Darren spent the entirety of the flight thinking of his mate. The pain in her voice, on her face, and the tears in her eyes, all as a result of Darren not claiming her. Pain, he had his own. Not claiming her was a physical, mental hell--it was pain from head to toe. But, he had reasoned that he'd rather live with that pain, than put Cass through one second of his impressive--or not--collection of screw-ups. Not to mention, all the bullshit that came with being King.
I'd rather cut off my own head than cause her pain like I saw that day.
Which is why they were over European airspace, because Cass was in Ireland. She left to escapehim.
Because seeing me hurt her.
"Darren, we're ten minutes out from Dublin."
Liam's voice cleared his guilt-filled thoughts. He ran his hands through his hair and realized he needed to go splash some water on his face. "Thanks."
"No problem."
A minute later, he stood in front of the mirror and frowned. One of his buddies in college looked like he was in a perpetual hangover. Darren's roommate used to tease the guy, telling him that he looked like he'd been ridden hard and put away wet. That saying pretty much summed up the reflection in the mirror.
Maybe I should stop off and get a haircut, buy a new shirt and jeans.
He probably woulddo that, if it didn't take much time. His primary objective was to find Cass and get them back to the plane as soon as possible. Hell, he might as well tell Liam to file a return flight plan for, what, five hours from now? Yeah, that should do it. He hated the thought of claiming his mate in the bedroom on the plane, but damned if he was going to wait to get back to Raleigh. And, they wouldn't be in Ireland for very long. Oh no. In and out, that was his plan. They'd be back in no time.

***

Liam kept up with Darren's footsteps, barely.
"Still don't understand why you wouldn't want another beer. That may have been the best I've ever had. We should take a European beer tasting trip, just for comparison, though. German ales are pretty damned good." They'd only gone in the last bar because Darren caught Cass's scent.
"Not interested." Glancing around the crowded Temple Bar section of Dublin, Darren wondered why Cass would be there. She was private, definitely not the type to hang out in tourist spots.
"Or we could just stay here and sample whiskey. Allthe whiskey."
Technically, that didn't sound like too bad of a plan, if he weren't searching for his missing mate. "You should get on your knees and thank God that you can't get cirrhosis."
Liam snorted just as Darren thought he'd, again, picked up on Cass's scent. He froze mid stride and almost took out a group of people. Peering inside the closest bar, he inhaled deeply and looked for her glossy black hair. Nada.
Shit.
Darren turned, making a complete circle so he could visualize everything around him. His frustration was growing. Cass was so close, and he needed to see her. Feel her. Wrap her in his arms. Drop to his knees and apologize for being a colossal ass. Spend the next century begging her forgiveness. Then spend the rest of his life making her happy.
The sounds of barf splattering the pavement shook him out of his thoughts.
"This"--he pointed down at the moaning human in front of him--"is what all the whiskey gets you."
Liam glanced down with disdain as they stepped around the human. "Not me." He waved a negligent hand. "Higher tolerance and all that."
"Mmm hmm." Looking around, again, Darren barely restrained a growl. Cass's scent grew fainter, and he was no damned closer to finding her.
Going to lose my motherfucking mind.
Material brushed his arm, and Darren snarled as his head snapped around. "Hey, do you mind holding my jacket while I tie my shoe?"
What the fuck?Darren snatched the jacket and Liam bent, after casting a pointed glare toward Darren's hands. Claws had already punched through the tips, and if he were a betting person, he'd put money on his eyes glowing. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes, he slipped on his polarized Ray Bans, covered both fists with the jacket and willed himself to calm.
"No problem."
Biggest white lie ever. If Darren spent two more seconds out there without Liam's assistance, he'd likely have shifted and torn a bloody path through the Temple Bar district.
They needed to get out of public, check into a room and Darren needed to sleep off any jet lag. Then come sunrise, he'd try again.
Liam stood and cast a worried glance at Darren. "Okay?"
Not in the slightest. "Fine. Let's get something to eat, go find a room, and search again tomorrow."
Liam almost seemed to slouch in relief. "Sounds good. We'll hit the roads in the morning."
He confirmed that with a small nod. And I'll spend another sleepless night without her.

Excerpt:

Standing in the back of the elevator, Serena's warmth and scent wreaked havoc on Dylan's senses with every breath he took.  He was still on edge from her rubbing up against him on the dance floor, and it didn’t help matters that her backside was inches away from finding out just how hot and bothered she’d managed to make him.  He was so excruciatingly hard his dick throbbed for relief, which sadly it wasn’t going to get tonight, and he shifted his stance so his erection didn’t end up prodding Serena’s ass.

It seemed to take forever until they reached their floor, and they quietly walked down the hall toward their separate junior suites, which were located directly across from each other, with him and Eric on one side, and her and Chelsea on the other.

She retrieved her key card from the small purse she’d worn with the strap across her body so she didn’t have to hold the bag.  He started to tell her good night as she waved the plastic card in front of the lock mechanism, but the faint sounds he heard coming from inside her room—unmistakable moaning, groaning, sex noises—had him blurting out, “Don’t open the door!” right as she pushed inside.

She sucked in a startled breath and froze as she belatedly realized what she’d just walked in on—their friends getting laid.  With each other. Half-dressed, Eric was sitting on the couch in the living room area, with Chelsea straddling his lap, her dress hiked up to the tops of her thighs as they kissed and groped and moaned in pleasure, oblivious to the fact that they had an audience.  Jesus, out of courtesy, the least they could have done was hang the do-not-disturb sign on the door.

“Oh, crap,” Dylan heard Serena rasp.  Clearly flustered, she spun around, and in her haste to get out of the room, she slammed right into him as the door shut behind her.

The unexpected impact had her wobbling on her heels, and his hands automatically shot out to grab her arms, then hauled her close to keep her steady on her feet.

Big fucking mistake.  Not only because her sweet, firm breasts were crushed against his chest and her body plastered to his, but the big, round eyes staring up at him in shock had nothing to do with what they’d just witnessed and everything to do with the stiff length of his erection tenting his pants that was now pressing insistently against her belly.

“Oh my God, are you turned on because you just saw . . .”

Her words trailed off, but he knew what, or whom, she was referring to.  The easy answer was to say yes, even if it did make him look like a pervert, but the frustration he’d been dealing with all night was at its tipping point and overrode common sense.

“No, it’s because of you, Serena,” he said through gritted teeth, the filter on his words having gone AWOL.  “I’ve been hard as a rock since you wiggled your ass against my dick out on the dance floor.  I’m a man, you’re gorgeous and hot as hell, so yeah, I fucking want you.”

Time stood still as the truth spilled out of him, his heart racing in his chest at what he’d just revealed.  Serena’s lips parted, her features etched at first with disbelief, then quickly shifting to hope and elation, then on to something more daring and courageous.

“It’s now or never,” he heard her whisper right before she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulled his head down to hers, and kissed him . . . not like a friend, but a sinfully sexy lover.

This couldn’t happen.  Stop her, his brain shouted as their mouths merged and her tongue touched his bottom lip enticingly . . . but the accumulation of desire he’d harbored for his best friend for so many years finally crashed through every bit of self-discipline he had left, which wasn’t much at this point.

He was helpless to resist her, and he suddenly no longer wanted to.

Liza's Review:

I loved every single thing about Tall, Dark and Tempting! The best friends to lovers troupe is absolutely one of my favorites and Ms. Wilde did an amazing job with it.

I knew when we first met Serena and Dylan they were perfect for each other. The fact they had grown up as best friends, yet both developed bigger feelings and never shared those feelings with each other for years had me laughing out loud. I loved Dylan stocked Serena’s favorite ice cream for when some guy she dated turned out to be an idiot.

When they finally give into their attraction to one another, they are so freaking hot together!!!! I mean I seriously loved their chemistry together. Of course the fact that there is a bit of freak out on both their parts after about broke my heart. They finally had each shown their true feelings for each other but fear of loss of friendship almost ruined their relationship for good.

I loved that Serena was willing to push for more first. Because of all that happened with Dylan’s parents, I knew his fears were irrational, but felt his fear and pain still. I will say the phrase”go big or go home” was totally part of Dylan’s plan once he needed to fix his screw up. OMG I cried all the happy tears as he showed Serena how much he loved her. Seriously make sure you have your tissues handy.

Tall, Dark and Tempting was absolutely my favorite book in this series! I also am super excited for the upcoming spin-off series from Erika Wilde and Carly Phillips. Two of my favorite authors writing another series of books together puts me in my happy place! I highly recommend this book to all readers who love contemporary romances!
