Emilia—

All I’ve
ever wanted was to marry for love.

But girls
like me don’t have that luxury.

We are used
as pawns in a game we can’t control.

The game?
It’s called Mafia.

I was
foolish enough to try to change the rules… and I lost.

Luca—

She was
promised to me years ago.

And he
dared to take her from me.

Dared to
touch what was mine.

I put an
end to that.

I hope he’s
enjoying the view from his dirt room.

Emilia—

My
beloved’s killer placed a ruby ring on my finger and called me his queen.

But that
red gem symbolizes something different for me.

It
represents the blood shed by those I love most.

Hell was
empty the day we wed.

Because the
devil was standing before me and said “I do.”

Luca—

I saw her
as a possession.

A shiny toy
I didn’t want other boys to play with.

But she’s
so much more.

Beautiful
and brave and strong and broken all at once.

She tastes
like everything I’ve ever wanted.

Emilia—

Hidden and
patient.

I wait for
the perfect time to seek my revenge.

But slowly,
I feel him possessing me.

His heart
is full of darkness… and I still want every inch of him.

Hard as I
try, I can’t escape loving this beautiful monster.

Luca—

I’m waiting
patiently because I already know that she’s mine.

Mine in a
way that no one will ever understand.

Even if she
hasn’t yet realized it.

For love,
I’d do anything.

For her,
I’d do everything.

Excerpt

I focus my attention on the girl sitting to Sofia’s left. The more
beautiful one. The older-looking one. The more frightened-looking one with
tears pooling in her lower lids.

Dark brown hair cascading over her shoulders and down her arms, the ends
nuzzling against her bare skin like a frightened child clinging to its mother.
Almond-shaped deep-caramel eyes surrounded by lush dark lashes. A few scattered
freckles across the bridge of her perfectly shaped nose. Plump, glossy coral
lips.

In my wildest dreams, my betrothed didn’t grow up to be this beautiful.
And it annoys the hell out of me because I don’t want to be attracted to her.

I want to make her suffer.

Sofia Bellini grips the hand of the girl in question. “Please, Marco.
Swear to me on your honor that my daughter will be safe with you.”

My father chuckles. “Emilia is going to give us babies, heirs to the
Rossini empire. There is no safer place for her than with our family. You know
that.”

Sofia and the girl beside her, my Emilia, embrace one another and sob.
Her grandmother and sisters cluster around her doing the same. It’s pathetic. I
would have expected less of a display from Bellinis. Certainly not this
spectacle.

My betrothed has weaknesses. Those will need to be eliminated before she
influences our sons with that nonsense.

“That’s more than enough of that,” I tell them.

She lifts her chin and her eyes meet mine for the first time. Inside
those deep-caramel orbs, I see something I like very much: rage. There during
one heartbeat and gone the next, it was only a fleeting flash. But I saw it and
I don’t mistake it for what it is.

This girl is going to be so much fun to break.

“Come, Emilia. I’m ready to take you home.”

Nikki's Review:

I’m not sure where to start with this one. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so conflicted about a book and writing the review. At the beginning of the book there’s an author note, and in it, the author asks the reader to give, Luca, the hero, a chance at redemption. That left me kinda leery. I wasn’t sure what I was walking into. Was it cheating? Because that is an automatic DNF for me. I figured as long as it wasn’t that then I could probably get past any issues with the hero. I was not prepared for what was coming.

There wasn’t any cheating thankfully, but Luca turns out to be a bastard of the highest order. He, and his men, do something horrible, all so he can have her for himself. Welcome to the mafia! I was like...there is no coming back from this. There just isn’t. How am I suppose to find this hero redeemable, never mind actually like him. I honestly wanted to stop there, but I remembered the authors note. I pushed on...reluctantly.

Luca and Emilia both come from powerful mafia families, and that comes with a whole host of troubles. Mainly that Emilia doesn’t want to marry Luca, because you know, he is a horrible person. Again, I’m thinking, how is this going to work?

Here’s where I’m absolutely shocked, I ended up liking Luca. I know, crazy, right? I don’t know how the author did it, but I ended up really liking the murderous bastard. In my head I’m thinking, is it really so bad that he killed a bunch of people? I mean, he really seems to care about Emilia. And this is where I discovered that I’m clearly a crazy person. Or maybe it’s just that  Ms. Cates is a great author and she managed to do the unthinkable...redeem a damn murderer. You see why I’m so conflicted?

Honestly, I wanted to stop reading after only a chapter or two, but I’m glad I pushed through. Georgia Cates wrote a solid story that seemed to paint an accurate portrayal of a mafia family, at least as far as I could tell. I’m not exactly buddies with any mafia folk.

I’m giving this book 4 stars. I still struggle with Luca’s actions at the beginning, but the fact that the author made me feel so strongly means she did an outstanding job. She pulled all the feelings out of me. And now I have to live with the fact that I find Luca kinda hot. Meh, I never pretended to be a saint...or sane.

Excerpt:
“So this is the bedroom,” she said, looking around the immaculate space.
“Yes, it is. Feel free to put your own touches on it for as long as you’re here.”The decorator had pulled together an apartment for three single men.
She treated him to a generous smile. “Thank you.”
Knowing he’d be tempting himself and not caring, he stepped closer until her feminine fragrance filled his nostrils. They stared at each other for a long, charged moment, desire he couldn’t escape building inside him.
She met his gaze and her lips parted. It wasn’t an invitation, but her eyes still held his, and she wasn’t backing away either.
He slid his hand behind her neck, cupping her soft skin. “I know I’m your boss, so no pressure,” he said as he applied a bit to her skin. “But I want to kiss you.”
She paused. Looked up at him. Then rose onto her toes. His mouth met hers. Warm and willing, her soft lips glided against his and his entire body came alive. He tightened his grip on her neck as he slid his tongue into her waiting mouth. She tasted sweet and he deepened the kiss, wanting more of her. With a moan, her body leaned against his, her breasts pressing against his chest.
Their tongues meshed and mingled. Their harsh breathing filled the room. The kiss went on and he was in no rush to end the moment. But suddenly she gasped and pulled away.
“We shouldn’t,” she said, brushing her damp lips with her hand.
“Because…?”
She swallowed hard. “I just … I need to focus on my work,” she said, turning away so he couldn’t see her face.
He narrowed his gaze, wondering if something more was at play. A woman didn’t kiss him like she did, then back off that easily. But he also wasn’t going to push her. He’d see how things between them played out during her time here and take his cues from her. Which didn’t mean he wouldn’t play up the charm and test her resolve.
“I think the apartment will work out well.” She headed for the door.
“Do you need help moving in?”
“I’ve got it but thank you,” she said in a strained voice.
“Who’s helping?” he persisted.
“Well, Ellie. Owen wouldn’t get his hands dirty moving my clothing over. It’s fine. We’ve got it. She’s borrowing her parents’ car.”
He rolled his eyes. “I’ll be over at eight a.m. tomorrow and we’ll get you moved in.
”He wasn’t going to leave the two women to drag all her things alone back and forth up to the apartment.
“We’ll get me moved in?”
He grinned. “I’ve got partners, don’t I? All you need to worry about is packing your things up. We’ll handle the rest.”
“But–”
He placed a finger to her lips, and damned if her eyes didn’t darken with desire. She might be focused on her career, but she was interested in him as well.

Liza's Review:

I knew Landon Bennett’s book would rip my heart out from the beginning, but had no idea how emotional I would get reading this story. I loved every moment of this emotional roller coaster Carly Phillips takes her readers on in Better Than Sexy.

Landon Bennett knows Vivi Zane aka Vivienne Clark is the right person for their summer residency the moment he sees her viral video. He also knows he wants her from the moment he sees her as well.

Vivienne is attracted to Landon from the moment he makes her the offer for the summer residency. She knows she recognizes the name of Club TEN29 when offered the summer residency, but doesn’t realize why until she checks out the website. I won’t lie, I failed to read the blurb, so I audibly gasped when she figured out her estranged brother Vic was the man who killed Landon’s twin and had caused so much trouble for the club recently.

Better Than Sexy was the most emotional story of the series for me. I loved both Vivi and Landon and my heart broke for each of them at various times during this story. I adored them as a couple from their very first kiss. Their chemistry was absolutely amazing, and like with any couple mistakes were made on both sides. I loved even with mistakes along the way Landon and Vivi found their way back to each other.

I loved the time with Landon, Tanner, and Jason in this story. These three men survived a horrible event that could have destroyed them yet found a way not only to live but to have meaning in their lives. I loved that while Levi was gone, each of these men wanted to live their best life in tribute to Levi.

I’ve loved all three books in this series, but have to say Better Than Sexy was my most emotional read by far. I love when a story rips out my heart and puts it back together, and Ms. Phillips did so like a pro in Better Than Sexy. I highly recommend this series to all romance readers.
