Excerpt
Elle’s prince charming stepped forward until he was standing right in front of her, so close she could breathe in the scent of his woodsy cologne, could see the darkening of his golden eyes and the now captivating smile curving his lips that did crazy, arousing things to her female hormones.  Authoritative and Intense was an incredibly hot look on him, but this charismatic version gradually emerging had the ability to sweep her off her feet.

“I’m Hunter Wilder,” he introduced himself, and tipped his head curiously.  “And you are?”

So incredibly smitten.  Her tongue suddenly felt tied, and while he was the epitome of confident male sophistication, she had to struggle not swoon like a Disney princess in front of him.  “My name is Elle.”

He raised a dark brow.  “And your last name?”

She bit her bottom lip in debate, which didn’t go unnoticed by him as he candidly looked at her mouth like he wanted to devour it.  The thought sent a jolt of lustful need pulsing deep and low, settling in all those dormant places that had forgotten what it felt like to be wanted and desired.

There was something incredibly magical about this moment, about tonight and this enigmatic man who’d made the decision to stop her from leaving when he easily could have watched her go.  This evening was all about fairy tales where anything could happen, and she wanted that enchanted, mysterious feeling to remain because tomorrow, her less than appealing reality still awaited her.  And she was fairly certain that a wealthy, dynamic man like Hunter Wilder wouldn’t be interested in a woman who had a wealth of issues and problems currently plaguing her life.

With that thought in mind, she kept her reply flirtatious, and her full identity anonymous. “Tonight, it’s just Elle.”

“Okay, Just Elle,” he teased, his voice infused with amusement as he extended his bent arm to her in a gallant gesture.  “Will you be my date for the evening and accompany me to the Wilder Way ball?”

Determined to have fun with this man and enjoy her evening, wherever it might lead, she nodded and slipped her hand into the crook of his arm. “It would be my pleasure to be your date for the evening.”

A slow, sinful smile eased up the corners of his kissable mouth as he slid a big, warm hand over the one resting on his forearm to hold it there—as if she’d even consider letting him go.  “Trust me, beautiful girl, before this evening is over, I have a feeling the pleasure is going to be all mine.”

The dark, forbidden promises glinting in his eyes stole her breath and sent a delicious, decadent heat cascading through her veins.  Oh, Lord. Elle sincerely hope so.

Liza's Review:

I really wasn't sure how much I would love Absolute Pleasure as it was a Cinderella retelling, and until now the movie Ever After was my only positive look at Cinderella. Erika Wilde totally and completely blew me away with Absolute Pleasure!

I loved grouchy Hunter Wilder when we first met him, and couldn't wait to meet the woman who in one night pretty much brought him to his knees. Elaina "Elle" Darien was everything I hoped for and more for Hunter. She is so very strong and I loved her for Hunter.

Hunter and Elle had such amazing chemistry. Like OMG smoking hot, steam up my kindle screen chemistry. Hunter is all Alpha and in charge and Elle just seemed to blossom when they were together. I seriously loved Hunter wanted to take care of Elle, yet gave her space if needed.

Elle's step-mother Helena might have been even more evil than the one in Cinderella, and her step-sisters Gwen and Claire honestly didn't seem much better at first. I was so glad when the step-sister I didn't hate came forward to help out Elle when really needed.

Absolute Pleasure was so amazing I literally re-read it as soon as I finished reading it the first time. It hit on all my favorite things in a contemporary romance. I loved both Maddux's and Hunter's stories so much and can't wait to read Tempest's story. Erika Wilde is one of my go-to authors for sexy, hot, emotional romances, and she totally delivered with Absolute Pleasure in the very best way.

Excerpt

Jason had settled into a chair in the center of the shop, surveying the work going on around him. He’d already left once, returning with sandwiches and sodas for everyone. As the hours passed and he vacillated between returning messages on his phone and talking to the workmen he obviously knew, she grew more confused.

“Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” she asked him.

He raised an eyebrow as if to say, Really? “Nowhere more important. I want to make sure the work here is done correctly and this place looks exactly the way you want it.”

She appreciated his thoughtfulness, but he had to have better things to do than worry about her. “Okay, but I can handle that. I don’t want to take up more of your day than I already have. I can stick around until the guys are finished, lock up, and head home.”

He folded his strong arms over his chest, his olive-green Henley pulling tight over his muscles. “And do you think I’m going to leave you here alone after what you told me about your brother?”

She’d been pushing thoughts of Colton aside all day. “I have pepper spray on my keychain.” The words sounded ridiculous, even to her.

She was no match for her brother, and if he was strung out? He’d have a wiry strength she couldn’t handle. She knew that firsthand, memories of her hands trying to pull his wrists off her neck very clear in her mind.

“Okay, fine. I appreciate you making sure I get home safely.” She’d be a fool to fight Jason’s protective nature.

“You still don’t get it. But you will.” He shook his head, amusement warring with a more serious expression. “You’re coming home with me, sweetness. I’m not leaving you here or in that shitty walk-up with a crappy lock your brother could break with one good kick.”

“Hey! That’s my apartment you’re insulting!” And all she could afford.

“It’s only an insult if I’m wrong.” He studied her, as if daring her to argue.

“I can’t just move in with you!”

He sighed. “Fine. You need someone to vouch for me? We can call my partners. Or my sister. Or… Hey, Sam! Am I trustworthy?” Jason yelled out to the man who was just climbing down a ladder, her clean window staring back at her.

Sam strode up to them and looked from Jason to Faith and back again. “Best man I know. Take a look at this.” Reaching into his pocket, Sam pulled out his phone, then began scrolling through his pictures.

“This is my girl.” He turned the phone so Faith could see a picture of a grinning little pixie with a bright smile and a pom-pom hat on her bald head, no hair hanging down beneath the folded brim.

“She’s beautiful,” Faith said, sliding her finger over her face.

“And if it wasn’t for this guy introducing us to his sister, I don’t think my wife and I would have made it through the roughest parts of her illness.” He shoved his phone back into his pocket.

Looking up at Jason from beneath her lashes, she caught a flush on his cheeks.

“It just so happens I could help you, man. But I’m glad Sienna could do her part. She loves fundraising and doing anything she can for kids who’ve been through what she has.”

Faith would like to help her one day, when there was no danger following her around, she thought sadly. For now, though, she had to fight through her own problems and not bring them into other people’s lives.

“Thanks, Sam.” Jason all but dismissed his friend, who waved and walked back to the other guy helping him.

“So? Still think I’m a serial killer?” Jason asked her.

Liza's Review:

Seriously Carly Phillips gave me yet another Dare brother to fall in love with in Sexy Dare. Jason Dare is yummy and I loved him from the moment he appeared on the page.

Jason Dare and his friends Tanner Grayson and Landon Bennett nightclub Club TEN29 is named in honor of their best friend Levi, who was Landon's twin brother. Jason and his partners are all broody men, and I loved seeing Jason be totally blown away when he stopped to help Faith Lancaster with a flat tire. His protective instincts went into overdrive from the moment he laid eyes on Faith.

Faith is hiding in plain sight from her brother, who wants part of the money her mother left her, as he was cut off for being a drug addict. Jason immediately recognizes she needs both help and protection, but knows it has to be on her terms. I absolutely loved how strong Faith was and the fact she accepted help when she needed it. I loved the suspense aspect in this story and thought it played out well and with great pacing.

The chemistry between Jason and Faith was there from the moment they first met. OMG I loved them so much together, even when Jason was all friends only...which of course he has no chance of keeping. Seriously Jason and Faith were so perfect together from the very beginning. Yes he was super broody at times and didn't want a future with anyone because past losses, but I just loved them together from the start. I have to say that Jason of all the Dare siblings was one of the toughest to let everything from his past go. I got so mad at him so many times for putting up walls to try and keep his heart protected from the one person who already loved him so much. I'm not saying after all his dad had done to their family, and the loss of his best friend Levi in college weren't reasons to protect himself. I just felt like he held on to the past so much so he almost missed out on an amazing future.

Spending time with so many members of Jason's family made me super happy with this story as well. The Dare family, with the exception of Robert Dare, are some of my favorite characters every from Carly Phillips, and I loved seeing not only Jason's siblings, but some of his cousins as well. I had all the feels from reconnecting with so many of my favorite characters in this story!

Sexy Dare was an amazing start to a new series from Carly Phillips. I'm already totally in love with this series and can't wait to see both Tanner and Landon each get their own stories. I highly recommend this book and series to romance book lovers!

WUIY high res.jpeg

Wrapped Up in You, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Jill Shalvis.

It’s love. Trust me.

After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporary—schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivy’s reinvented life is on solid ground. And she’s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past she’s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel O’Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers weren’t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.

Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivy’s a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, she’s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. Blog Tour.jpg

Excerpt:
He held her gaze for a long beat before taking the bag and unzipping it, finding the dishes she’d put together for him. “Not tacos,” he said in surprise.

“Making tacos is my job,” she said. “This was for something else.”

     “And what’s that?”

“An apology for being … grumpy last night.”

     “You weren’t.”

She gave him a get real look and he smiled. “Okay, maybe a little. But it was understandable. You’d just gotten an unfortunate and unfair surprise.” He gently tilted her face up to his. “You doing okay this morning?”

     “Yes,” she said. “Of course.”

“Of course,” he repeated and shook his head. “Smart, tough, and resilient,” he murmured, his gaze on her face.

Now it was her turn to smile. “Some might say stubborn, impulsive, and doesn’t know when to quit.”

“Yeah,” he said. “But I find those things very attractive.”

Honestly, she didn’t know how to take half the things he said. They made her feel both terrified and exhilarated at the same time. “You’re a strange man.”

“So I’ve been told.” He looked over the food. “You poison any of it?”

“No, and only because I’d never waste food.” But to prove it, she grabbed the fork she’d packed and took a bite of her eggs. “Mmm,” she moaned before she could stop herself, but hey, she’d worked out and been on the move ever since, and she was starving. Plus, she made damn good eggs if she said so herself.

Again their eyes met, and that now familiar spark went right through her. She wanted him. Quite badly, if going off her racing pulse meant anything. He was so … what, exactly? Steady? Tough? Intense and yet somehow easy-going, not to mention also extremely easy on the eyes?

“You didn’t have to cook something special for me,” he said, sounding touched.

“You helped me last night. I repay my debts.”

“I didn’t do it so you’d feel indebted to me,” he said and cocked his head as he studied her for a beat. “Someday you’re going to have to tell me about the apparent assholes who’ve been in your life to make you so distrusting of me.”

“Oh, don’t flatter yourself. It’s not just you. I don’t trust anyone. And it wasn’t just me paying back a debt,” she admitted. “I wanted to cook for you.” And because that made his smile warm, which in turn made something inside her warm as well, she shrugged and backed up a few steps, needing breathing room. “I also wanted to thank you for your help,” she said, feeling annoyingly awkward as he shoved stacks of plans to one side of the table and started pulling everything else out of her bag with a deep male hum of pleasure when he caught sight of the pancakes.

“Are those blueberry?” he asked very seriously.

     She nodded.

“Fair warning, if they’re as good as the eggs, I really am going to drop to my knees and ask you to marry me.”

That startled a laugh out of her. “Fair warning, if you drop to your knees, I’m going to use my considerable kickboxing skills on you.”

Liza's Review:

Wrapped Up In You is the 8th book in the Heartbreaker Bay series of books from Jill Shalvis. Kel O'Donnell, Caleb's cousin,  and Ivy Snow, taco truck owner, are both pretty guarded individuals thanks to things for each of their pasts. Kel is a by the rules cop in Idaho, while Ivy is finally ending her nomadic lifestyle in San Francisco.

I enjoyed Ivy and Kel's story. While they were pretty opposite in certain things, there was enough alike about them and chemistry between them, for me to keep wanting them to spend more and more time together. They did seem to dance around their attraction way longer than I expected, but it also seemed to work for them as a couple. As with any book by Jill Shalvis, there are moments where I'm laughing out loud one minute, and crying a bit at others. I had wanted Kel's book since forever, and while I still love him, he mad me mad on more than one occasion in Wrapped Up In You. I think because I've always seen him as such a great guy, when he acted what I felt like was out of character, it took a bit for me to get past it.

Honestly while I enjoyed the romance in Wrapped Up In You, the friendships Ivy finally realized she had with all the women in the series gave me all the happy feels. They each had each others backs always and the friendships with the women were every bit as important to Ivy moving forward with a romance as it was to her everyday life. I love how the friendships that develop in a Jill Shalvis book end up being every bit as important to the main characters as the romance.

Wrapped Up In You was a great addition to the Heartbreaker Bay series of books. I love with each new book, we get to spend time with favorite characters from the series and I know I'm going to have an emotional romance that will keep me reading way past my bedtime.

BUTTERFLY IN FROST

About the Book

Title: Butterfly in Frost
Author: Sylvia Day
Release Date: August 27, 2019
Publisher: Montlake Romance

Summary

Once, I would never have imagined myself here. But I’m settled now. In a place I love, in a home I renovated, spending time with new friends I adore, and working a job that fulfills me. I am reconciling the past and laying the groundwork for the future.
Then Garrett Frost moves in next door.
He’s obstinate and too bold, a raging force of nature that disrupts the careful order of my life. I recognize the ghosts that haunt him, the torment driving him. Garrett would be risky in any form, but wounded, he’s far more dangerous. I fear I’m too fragile for the storm raging inside him, too delicate to withstand the pain that buffets him. But he’s too determined…and too tempting.
And sometimes hope soars above even the iciest desolation.

Excerpt: Butterfly in Frost by Sylvia Day

Roxy bounces on her feet with excitement. “Les and Marge sold their house.”

I blink. “I didn’t know they were selling.”

She laughs and heads toward the front door. “That’s the thing. They weren’t.”

“Wait, what?” I hurry after her as she steps outside.

I look to the right at my home, a lovingly restored butterfly-roofed midcentury, then on to the traditional house just beyond it that belongs—belonged—to Les and Marge. Including Roxy’s, all three of our homes have unique lots set between the homes that line the street and the Sound, affording us unhindered views of the water as well as exceptional privacy—all within a twenty-minute drive of the airport.

Roxy shortens the length of her stride to allow me to catch up, then glances over at me. “The day after you flew to New York, a Range Rover pulled into their driveway, and the guy inside offered them cash to close—and move out—in fourteen days.”

My step falters, and Minnie gets momentarily tangled in her leash. The dog shoots me what I would describe as an irritated look, then keeps trotting forward. “That’s crazy.”

“Isn’t it? Les wouldn’t say how much the offer was, but I’m thinking it was huge.”

We march up the inclined driveway, my head tilted back to take in the houses scaling the hillside. Designed with big windows to maximize the view, the homes have a look of wide-eyed wonder. Our little stretch of the Sound used to be a secret, but with the housing boom taking over Seattle and Tacoma, we’ve been discovered. Many residences are undergoing major renovation to suit the tastes of new owners.

Reaching the road, we turn left. To the right is a dead end.

“Well, if they’re happy,” I say, “I’m happy for them.”

“They’re overwhelmed. It was a lot to happen all at once, but I think they’re happy with their decision.” Roxanne stops when Bella does, and we wait as the two dogs mark one of their usual spots on the gravel edging the asphalt. There are no curbs on the streets in our neighborhood and no sidewalks. Just beautiful lawns and a profusion of flowering shrubs.

“We all tried prying information out of them,” she goes on, “but they weren’t sharing anything about the sale.” She gives me a sidelong glance. “But they did share a bit about the buyer.”

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Because Mike and I both think the buyer is someone famous. A film director maybe. Or an artist. Can you imagine? First Emily, a bestselling author. Then you, a reality-TV surgeon. Now this guy! Maybe we’re sitting on the new Malibu—beachside living without wildfires or state income tax!”

The mention of Roxy’s husband, Mike, coaxes an inner smile. A New York transplant like me, he adds a welcome touch of the life I left behind to the reality I’ve since created for myself—a reality that’s just been rocked by the loss of neighbors I like.

“What are the clues you’re working with?” I ask, deciding to play along. If I’ve learned anything the past year, it’s to accept the things I cannot change. A tough task for a control freak like me.

“Les pointed out to this guy that he hadn’t even seen the inside of the house. The guy said he didn’t need to. He knew already that ‘the light is perfect.’ I mean, who would say that? Gotta be someone who’s in visual arts, right?”

“Maybe,” I agree tentatively, disquieted by the unexpected conversation. The road rises sharply before us, the incline steep enough to put a little burn in my thighs. “Doesn’t mean he’s famous, though.”

“That’s the thing.” Her words carry a note of breathlessness. “Les wouldn’t give numbers, but he did say it was crazy the guy didn’t just buy that huge compound at the end of the street. That house is listed for three and a half million!”

My mind staggers at the thought. Les and Marge have—had—a beautiful home, but it’s not worth anywhere near that much.

“I think I saw the buyer once through that big arched window in the living room,” Roxy goes on. “The blonde with him was a looker. Supermodel skinny with legs for days.”

I’m panting when we reach the top; Roxy, who hits a gym most days of the week, is not.

A quarter mile farther, there’s a street to the right leading to Dash Point. Beyond that and straight ahead, the road slopes back down and around until it’s at water level. Redondo Beach is there, as is Salty’s, a restaurant on stilts in the water with expansive views of Poverty Bay and beyond. I’m about to wax poetic about Salty’s seafood chowder when a runner dashes around the corner at a full sprint. His sudden appearance rattles me. A closer look makes me freeze midstride. My breath locks in my lungs.

There are too many things to register at once, so my mind attempts to absorb the whole man. Dressed only in black shorts and shoes, he is a visual feast of deeply tanned skin, intricate sleeves of tattooed art, and sweat-slicked, flexing musculature.

And his face. Sculpted. Square-jawed. Brutally, breathlessly handsome.

Roxy, now a few feet in front of me, gives a low whistle. “Hot damn.”

Nikki’s Review:

This is a hard review to write. But not for the reason you might be thinking. This book wasn’t poorly written, and it didn’t have a plot full of holes. It wasn’t anything like that. It’s a hard review to write because I would be doing a disservice to readers if I told you too much. You need to go on this journey on your own.

I had so many questions floating around in my head while reading. I thought maybe I was missing something, or maybe I just wasn’t getting it. But holy hell, I got ALL the answers. And then I was left stunned. I just sat there for a while thinking about it all. I was shattered, but I also had a sense of peace. Or the starting of something that felt like peace for the characters.

I’m being very vague, when all I want to do to is spill my thoughts in their entirety into this review. Just know that every word was beautifully written, and if you find yourself scratching your head, trying to figure out where the story is going, have faith. Sylvia Day created a book that will bring you to your knees.
