Nikki's Review:

This book was...heavy. It was emotionally exhausting. It was heartbreaking, and it was beautiful.

Lord, this review is hard to write. Let me backup a bit by saying that I loved this book. But loving it doesn’t mean that I’ll have an easy go at expressing my feelings about it. I’ve been putting off writing this review for a few days because I’ve been processing everything I read. I think, maybe, I can finally put the words down.

Poppy and Gavin both come from difficult backgrounds, and their childhood friendship provides an escape from that. It provides them comfort. I liked seeing their relationship grow and develop from the awkward start to an all encompassing love. You really get to watch them grow.

A series of circumstances separate Poppy and Gavin, and Jesus, that was hard to not feel devastated for them both. Poppy’s grief over Gavin’s absence was palpable.

Insert Tucker. I spent a good portion of this book feeling really confused and conflicted on how I felt about him. Much like Poppy, I’m sure. I think Ms. Leigh did a phenomenal job at really putting me inside Poppy’s mind and heart. I was upset in regards to some of Poppy’s decisions, but now I know that all of that stuff was setting the stage for a much more complicated situation.

I know I’m being vague in this review, but I really can’t get into specifics. As a reader, I think I would be doing you a huge disservice to rob you of the experience of walking the journey with Poppy and Gavin. Even Tucker, as much as I grew to dislike him.

I will say this, and mean it with my whole heart, I love this book. It’s a departure from Tara Leigh’s other books, and it’s definitely darker, but it’s no less amazing. I do wish that there was more page time dedicated to Poppy and Gavin’s relationship. I did feel like this book wasn’t quite a full romance novel. In my opinion, It felt more like women’s fiction with romantic elements. No matter how you see it, it was beautifully written.

I still feel kinda wrung out, and it’s been a few days since I put the book down. I think I felt every emotion possible while reading this book. When an author does that to you, I think it’s a sign of a magical talent.

Excerpt
“Hello, Remy,” she said in greeting when she finally reached him.
“Tempest,” he replied with a cordial nod.
She cocked her head playfully to the side, momentarily drawing his gaze to the way she’d swept her dark hair into an intricate style that was held together with crystal and pearl pins.  The elegant updo left her shoulders and slender neck bare, emphasizing the pair of sparkling ruby earrings hanging from her lobes.
“Dare I say you look like you’re about to bolt for the exit,” she said, a light accusation in her tone.
He inhaled a deep breath—big mistake—because the scent of her soft, feminine perfume went straight to his dick.  It took effort to remain outwardly unaffected, and for her, he allowed a smile to ease across his lips. “Guilty as charged.”  He planned on doing exactly that as soon as she went on her way.
Her perfectly shaped brows furrowed in a concerned frown.  “Are you not having a good time?
“Don’t take this personally, but fairy tales are not my thing,” he replied, his tone wry.
“How do you know that for certain?” she countered, a flirtatious glimmer now sparking in her amber eyes.  “If you leave right now, you’ll never know if something magical might happen tonight.”
He huffed out a laugh at her whimsical, romantic notion, though the sound that erupted from his throat was as rough as sandpaper.  “I’m not looking for anything magical to happen.” In fact, he’d do his best to avoid anything even remotely close to it.
She shrugged a smooth, bare shoulder.  “Sometimes, it’s better to leave all expectations and cynicism at the door and just see where the evening takes you.”
He shook his head in disagreement.  “Trust me when I say my cynicism is well earned.”  And now he was determined that all that skepticism would protect what little was left of his soul from being further ransacked.  “I was happy to come and support the Wilder Way Foundation, and now that I’ve done that, I think it’s best if I go. Good night, Tempest.”
He started to walk away, but she grabbed at his tuxedo sleeve.  “Remy, wait.”
Not wanting to be rude, he stopped and glanced back at her.
The smile she gave him was so sweet and persuasive it made something in his chest shift ever so slightly.  “You can’t leave without having at least one dance.”
Oh, yes, he could, and he shored up his resolve against that imploring look of hers. “I don’t dance.”
The hand on his arm slid down, until her cool, slender fingers curled around his, not only startling him but ensnaring him in more ways than one.  “It’s a ballad,” she pointed out of the song Raevynn Walsh was now singing. “Everyone can slow dance. It takes minimal skill . . . unless you don’t trust yourself to stand that close to me?”
Her comment was underscored with a subtle challenge, an undeniable dare that alluded to the attraction between them that was getting increasingly difficult for him to resist.
“Just one dance,” she persisted oh so sweetly, her husky voice taking on a teasing lilt as she leaned in closer.  "I solemnly promise not to cast any kind of fairy-tale spell on you."
Bold and determined Tempest Wilder didn't give him another chance to turn her down.  With her hand secured in his, she pulled him toward the dance floor in front of the stage, which was already filled with other couples, and he would have looked like a jackass if he rebuffed her at this point.  Once she found a spot for the two of them, she turned back around and didn’t hesitate to step as close as their bodies would allow.
The provocative feel of her soft breasts pressing against his chest and her supple thighs skimming along his was like a fucking shock to his celibate system, and he automatically tensed in response to the sexy female curves aligning perfectly to his more masculine frame.  It was all he could do to keep his dick from getting hard as a spike against her lower stomach.
Still holding his one hand, she smoothed her other one up the lapel of his jacket and around his neck.  Clearly sensing his discomfort, she tipped her head back and gave him a flirty smile, no doubt meant to tease him.
“So, when it comes to slow dancing, the man usually puts his arm around the woman’s waist,” she suggested, since he hadn’t yet done so.  “And if he really likes the woman he’s with, he’ll splay his hand low on her back and pull her in close.”
Oh, he knew how to slow dance, but just the thought of putting his hands on her so intimately was wreaking havoc with his libido, and he had a feeling she was well aware of his predicament, too.  It was another sexy dare from her, and while he’d spent the past few years avoiding this kind of close contact with Tempest, the sexually starved man in him who desired this woman slipped past all his carefully erected walls.
Fuck it, he decided.  What could happen in a room full of people?  Giving in to the temptation to touch her, to enjoy the feel of her in his arms, even for a few minutes, he placed his hand on her bare back and slowly caressed his palm all the way down to the base of her spine.  The subtle pressure of his hand against her smooth skin drew her as close as the two of them could get, aligning their hips in a way that was suggestively carnal.
Breathing became difficult . . . He hadn’t been this close to a woman in over three years, and there was no denying she felt so damn good.  She was incredibly soft, she smelled like heaven, and she made him want to do something wild and wicked and uncharacteristic—like take her somewhere dark and private where he could give in to the lust clamoring inside him.
An unmistakable shiver coursed through her as they shifted in time to the slow song.  With her staring into his eyes, her own darkened with awareness as she moved her head to the side of his to speak into his ear.  “See, touching me wasn’t so bad, was it?”
“You’re bad,” he murmured, shocking himself with his own playful response when he’d been so indifferent to women for years.  It was as though this woman was rousing his sex drive, along with a more indulgent part of him, from a long, deep slumber. The thought was both frightening and exhilarating.
She drew her head back and laughed.  To his surprise, the light, sensual sound eased the rest of the tension in his body, allowing him to just enjoy the moment with her.
She gave him a cheeky grin.  “Just for the record, Mr. Lowell, I can be very bad, depending on the circumstance.”

Liza's Review:

No Inhibitions is my favorite book in the Dirty Sexy Fairy Tales series to date. I love each of Tempest’s brothers’ books so much, but hers totally blew me away.

Tempest Wilder has been attracted to Remy Lowell from the moment she first saw him. She has never acted on said attraction, as she didn’t believe he was attracted to her. However, once she discusses him being the contractor for Wilder Things, she can see he feels a mutual attraction.

OMG the level of heat between Tempest and Remy was off the charts hot!!! I absolutely fell in love with them as a couple from their very first kiss. The fact that Remy backs off because of his background and thinking Tempest’s older brother would kill him only made me love him more.

I’ll be honest; I never imagined a romance story based upon Lady and the Tramp before reading this story, but it was amazing from the very first page. I loved that a Tempest knew exactly what she wanted and had no problem making it happen. Remy was such a complex character thanks to his family’s past. I loved when Tempest shared her family history to show Remy they had more in common than he expected. It really seemed to help Remy look into the future and possibly see them as a couple. Yes, his crazy family dynamics did play a part in this story, but the love between Tempest and Remy was strong enough to survive anything thrown their way.

I loved No Inhibitions so much, and highly recommend it along with the rest of the series. I’m over the moon excited to see Ms. Wilde will be continuing this series, as I truly feel it is such an amazing series.

Excerpt:
Faint rays of sunshine still lit the sky as I headed to my SUV, but the air had just a hint of a bite to it. That was spring in the mountains. I glanced at Walker. “Thanks for the warm welcome.”
He gave my back a slap. “Anytime, brother.” He paused with me at my vehicle, looking out to the fields and then back to me.
“What is it?” You didn’t know someone as long as I’d known Walker without recognizing their tells. The little ticks that told you they were worried or angry or, like now, had something they wanted to say but were holding back.
“Kennedy.”
My body began to stiffen, but I forced it to relax. I was the master of giving nothing away, and this situation should be no different. “What about her?”
Walker shifted on his feet. “She’s young.”
“Looks it.” I didn’t know how young, but I’d find out soon enough.
Walker’s jaw hardened. “Be careful.”
I bristled at that. But he wasn’t wrong to warn me off. She had an innocence that radiated from her in waves. And I had no plans to change that, but I was curious. That…something I couldn’t put my finger on kept niggling at me as though she were playing at something she wasn’t. I shook my head and gave Walker a grin. “I’ve got no plans to defile Jensen’s protégé. You can rest easy.”
The set of Walker’s shoulders eased. “Good. You want free and easy, there are plenty of women around here who are down for that, just like you are. But I get the sense that’s not Kenz.”
“Kenz?” The nickname curled around my tongue. It fit her.
“That’s what Jensen calls her, said Kennedy was too formal. Guess it’s catching on.”
I nodded. “I gotta get back to the resort, but let’s grab a drink tomorrow. Hopefully, we’ll be celebrating my closing on that property.”
Walker grinned. “I hope it works out. Shoot me a text tomorrow, and we’ll figure out a time.”
“Sounds good.” I beeped my locks and opened my door, but paused before I climbed in. “Walker?” He paused in his trek back to the ranch house, turning to face me. “I’m happy for you.” The words made a burn take flight in my chest.
The smile that spread across his face was one that could only belong to a man who was a total goner for his woman. “Thanks, Cain. You’ll—” He cut himself off before he could finish the sentence. He knew better than to tell me that I’d find that. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“I am, too.” I gave a jerk of my chin and climbed into my SUV. The drive back to the resort I was staying at a few miles outside of town was quiet. Only the sounds of gravel under my tires to keep me company.
Gravel turned to pavement as I pulled into the resort. I hopped out of my Rover, leaving the door open for the valet. I ignored any polite smiles from fellow guests and staff as I headed straight for my suite.
The familiar itch at the back of my brain was back. Something that said I needed to know more about the girl from dinner. I slipped my keycard into the lock, fingers drumming against my thigh as I waited for the light to turn green. I pushed open the door and headed straight for the safe. Keying in the code, I removed my laptop.
I strode to the desk, setting my computer down and settling into the chair. I opened the laptop, typing in my security codes. I launched a browser and got to work. An hour went by in record time. An hour, and almost nothing to show for it.
I stared at the image on my screen. Auburn hair, freckles dusting the tops of her cheeks and nose, creamy white complexion below, and startling green eyes. There was no denying she was beautiful. Beautiful in a way that would stop a man in his tracks and make him do a whole lot of stupid shit just to get her to turn that smile his way.
But there was also no denying that she was a ghost. The only photo I could find of her was the one on her driver’s license. Other than that one single piece of ID, the woman didn’t exist. No bank account. No credit cards. No lease. No car.
There was nothing else, good or bad, that I could find. Anywhere. While some would say that was a good thing, I knew the truth. It was nothing but bad. People didn’t erase a life unless they had something to hide.
One dinner and I knew my friends were taken by her. It was no surprise. Sarah and Jensen had the most tender hearts of anyone I knew. They were forever rescuing strays, both animal and human. Hell, that’s why I was there, wasn’t it?
But they often didn’t think about the risks involved. Walker used to be good about checking that stuff out, but it seemed Taylor had softened him, made him just a touch less cynical about the world. I was happy for my brother, but it just meant that I needed to look out for the friends in my life who were more like family.
And that’s just what I’d do.

Nikki's Review:

I have loved each instalment in this series. Really loved them! But there was something extra special about this one. I think it has a lot to do with Cain being so broken. He was stoic and steady on the outside, but he was falling apart more and more as time went on. It makes the reader want to save him. And love on him.

Kennedy was the perfect heroine for Cain. She had her own baggage and vulnerabilities, but she didn’t need saving or coddling. While Cain wanted to do just that with her, she pushed him out of his comfort zone as a protector and made him face his demons.

This book has all the ingredients that make me love the romance genre. There’s a ton of angst ( my favourite), there’s passion, and there’s conflict. Catherine Cowles has an amazing ability to put all these things together and create something magical. I was so invested in these characters and their lives. She brought Cain and Kennedy to life, and I could fee their emotions. It was absolutely palpable.

I love the close knit friendships that have evolved over the series. Each character brings something to table to help pull the story together. It always feels like visiting old friends when they’re all on the page together.

This is the last book in The Sutter Lake series, and I don’t know how to feel about that. I truly believe that the author ended things the way it was suppose to. There’s no lingering questions or loose ends. But that doesn’t mean I’m ready to say goodbye to these incredible characters and Sutter Lake. I’ll always want just a little more. I’m greedy like that. 😉

WE ARE US SNEAK PEEK

We Are Us - SP banner (1).jpg

We Are Us, an all-new “powerful and beautifully written” love story from Tara Leigh is releasing February 27th, and we have a sneak peek inside this not-to-be-missed novel!

Sneak Peek

Sounds break through my insulated cocoon of unconsciousness. Harsh sounds. Ugly sounds. Buzzing. Beeping. Humming.

The fingers of my left hand twitch with the impulse to swat at… something. An alarm clock? The television remote? But although my wedding rings slide around my finger, my arm doesn’t move. Almost as if the platinum bands have turned into lead, weighing me down.

Panic whispers at the edge of my mind, though there is no corresponding pulse of adrenaline through my veins, forcing me into action. My limbs are heavy and uncooperative.

Make it stop. Make it stop. Make it stop.

Despite my silent pleas, the unwelcome orchestra continues its assault. Buzz. Beep. Hum.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this awful, this lethargic. Filled with an all-encompassing exhaustion that has seeped into the marrow of my bones.

Survivor’s guilt, apparently. Sleeping the day away is preferable to facing what happened, what I’ve done. The dawn of a new day isn’t a fresh start, a new beginning.

It is a violation. A betrayal.

Make it stop.

Finally, I manage to clutch at my covers, dragging them over my head. Egyptian cotton, a thread count so high it could be spun of silk. Surely it will muffle the noise.

But something is wrong. The fabric is rough beneath my fingertips. It doesn’t smell of the lavender and verbena packets tucked into the shelves of the linen closet. And there is a sterilized stench to the air I didn’t notice before.

The whisper of panic becomes more of a murmur, then a shout. This isn’t my bed.

The beeping noises pick up, racing now. My breaths quicken, my lungs throbbing from the sharp bite of bleach with each shallow inhale.

Hospital. I am in a hospital. The buzzing and beeping and humming. Those are machines.

What happened? Think, think.

My mind is frustratingly blank even as my skin prickles with memories of another time. Another confused awakening. Another frantic search for memories. Did he… No. He wouldn’t dare. Not again. Not ever again.
