Broken Blade (Colbana Files)

Broken Blade is the newest release in the Colbana Files series from J. C. Daniels. The release date was January 6, 2014. From the back cover.~

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken. She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn’t taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic…one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.

If she survives the job, she won’t be the same…and neither will those closest to her.

I was super lucky to get a review copy thanks to the author through NetGalley. This is one of my favorite series ever and after reading Blade Song, I needed to read Broken Blade. Let me just say right now, it was awesome!

I'm warning you up front, while I loved this book, it is just as emotional a read as Blade Song was...i.e. have tissues handy or a friend to text you through the tough spots.

Kit Colbana is one of my favorite characters ever. She is way stronger than even she realizes. I get why she was hiding out at the beginning of this book, but was so glad to see glimpses of the Kit I've come to know and love as the story progressed. I'm a romantic at heart, so I want Kit and Damon back together now! I understand Kit needs to heal, recover, and find herself again, but that doesn't keep me from wanting everything to be perfect now.

There is so much that goes on in this world with each book, I feel as if I will give tons of spoilers away if I say too much. I will say the world building that happens in each book just gets better and better. I love getting to find out something new about at least one character in every single book. Even with Kit not back to fully being herself in this book, I still loved watching her start to fight to come back.

The Kit Colbana series is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series out at this time...maybe even of all the UF series I read. I can't wait to see where Ms. Daniels takes this series with the next book.

Second Chance at Passion Cover Reveal & Excerpt

I'm so excited to share the cover, back cover blurb and an excerpt from Second Chance at Passion from Heather Lire. I'm a huge fan of her Holiday Vermont Series and couldn't wait to read Ethan's story. Let me tell you now it is awesome!!!

Release Date: February 14, 2014
Publisher: Desert Breeze Publishing

Blurb: Audrey Rodriguez has escaped her family's life styles of the rich and famous by moving to the small town of Holiday, Vermont. She settles into her new role as bookstore owner, never expecting to run into her Vegas hook-up.
Ethan Cartwright has been ordered to take a vacation, by his mom no less. The only people he can imagine spending down time with is his family in Holiday. While there he discovers that woman he'd had the best sex of his life was living in this story-brook town.
When Ethan's family needs help taking down a gold-digging-sperm-stealing-nut-job Ethan and Audrey go undercover giving them more than a second chance at passion.
Excerpt:
Audrey was saying goodbye to a happy customer when Morgan burst through the front door, moving as fast as her seven-month-pregnant body would let her. Brynn was right behind her.
Audrey moved around the counter.
"What's happened?"
Images of one of the kids being hurt flashed through her mind.
If something happened to one of those kids Ethan would be destroyed.
Morgan grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the stairs that led to her apartment. Whatever was happening had nothing to do with the kids. Reaching the door to her apartment Morgan pushed it open, and headed for the computer she had in the corner of the apartment. Morgan pulled out the chair and sat, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
An image appeared on the screen. It took her brain a moment to recognize what she was seeing. Two well-defined bodies, sweaty, beating the crap out of each other.
Audrey squinted at the two images. There was something about the bodies. Her breath caught. She knew those bodies, intimately. Well, at least one of them.
They really were identical, with the exception of one tattoo.
Ryan had one on each shoulder. Ethan had one on his left shoulder and one across the back of his shoulders.
She'd never understood the appeal of watching two men beat the crap out of each other, but the unleashed power Ethan was using, had all of her girl parts standing up and screaming. He was sweaty, and breathing hard, and he kept going.
"Bon Dieu." She breathed.
"Um, hmm." Morgan mumbled, rubbing her stomach.
"Where did you…" she gulped as Ethan and Ryan slammed to the floor. Images of the last time Ethan had her on the floor raced through her mind.
"Durf."
Audrey had met the owner of the local pub, and apparently the gym Ryan worked out in.
"God bless that man."
"Ryan is so getting lucky when he gets home. I don't care what the doctor says."
She'd grown up with three very active brothers, but they'd never gone at each other like this. It was primal and erotic at the same time.
"So's Ethan."
Not taking her eyes from the monitor she pulled a chair over and watched the fight. By the time Ethan and Ryan separated, her girl parts weren't just screaming. They were demanding she track him down and make him take care of them.
"Where?" She struggled to get out.
"Don't know, but I'm so glad my kids are at school." Morgan braced a hand on the desk and back of the chair and stood. "Now if you'll excuse me I'm going home and sending my husband a dirty text that is guaranteed to get him home."
A dirty text was a great idea. She pulled her phone from her pocket. Maudit, she still didn't have Ethan's cell number.
"Morgan could you…"
"Already sent."
She checked her text messages and sure enough there was a new message from Morgan with a phone number.
She trailed behind Morgan, making sure she didn't fall down the stairs in her hurry to get home. Entering the bookstore she discovered Brynn behind the counter, happily ringing up customers and talking books.
"Brynn, do you think you could watch the store this afternoon?"
What she had in mind was going to take more than an hour. If they surfaced before tomorrow she'd be surprised.
Brynn's laughter floated across the store.
"Sure. Tell Ethan he owes me one."
Audrey left her store in Brynn's capable hands and headed back upstairs. It wasn't a seduction she was planning. That was too tame. No, what she had planned was more along the lines of hard, fast and dirty. At least the first four times.
She typed a text message and hit send.

Excerpt 1

Damon.
My heart raced. It had been three weeks since I’d seen him. It seemed like longer. But it wasn’t long enough. I couldn’t—
The door opened. My hand convulsed on the water and the plastic crumpled. Lowering my gaze, I stared at the water and sighed. Dumping it in the recycler, I dried my hands off. I was surprised to see they weren’t shaking. That was nice, I thought. At least I could face him without showing how much of a mess I was.
He’d know, of course.
Damon always knew.
My heart bumped against my ribs as I turned around and saw him standing in the door. His hair had grown out longer than I’d ever seen it, maybe even close to an inch all over. Eyes the color of thunderheads stared at me as I stood there. A muscle pulsed in his jaw.
The silence was weighted, a heavy burden settling on my shoulders as I fought the urge to back away. Run. Hide.
Nearly a month had passed since he’d barreled his way through the wards at TJ’s. An eternity seemed to stretch out between us, words hung unspoken, the pain in my heart, in my soul, so vivid and all consuming, it all but doubled me over.
Doyle was the one to shatter it. “Kit needs some information on somebody in the Clan.”
Damon shot me a look and then focused on Doyle. “What for?”
“Work.”
Damon looked back at me, taking in the gun, the K-bar strapped to my thigh and although he didn’t say anything, I suspected he was fully aware of the fact that I was pretty much loaded for bear. His gaze dropped to my belt—at least that was what I figured he was looking at, although some part of me, the part that wasn’t instinctively cowering in fear, felt a warm, shivery little tingle spark, then spread. I rested my hand on my belt and stroked the silver wire of the garrote, needing something to ground myself.
“You looking to kill one of my cats, kitten?”

Excerpt 2

“I don’t like that woman, Damon. I don’t like her at all.”
A muscle in his jaw pulsed. “She’s a bitch, but the clan doesn’t exactly give out phone numbers just because a human girl calls up looking for one.”
“And what about when your girlfriend calls to talk to you after a fight?” I don’t know if I’d meant to talk about that or not. But the words ripped out of me and…and they were justthere. Thrown out like a sucker-punch and now they hung between us like an ugly, red stain.
Silence struck, heavy and weighted, crackling with more tension that I could stand.
Damon came off the couch in a smooth, controlled motion, his eyes locked on my face and everything inside him seemed…quiet.
Too quiet. All of that caged, restless energy was sucked down and he just stared at me, unblinking. It was damned unnerving.
Seconds ticked by and finally, he said softly, “What did you just say?”

Back to You

Back to You is the newest release in the Coming Home series from author Jessica Scott. The release date is January 7, 2014 and the publisher is Forever Grand Central Publishing. From the back cover.~

He's in for the fight of his life . . .

Army captain Trent Davila loved his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children. But when he almost lost his life in combat, something inside him died. He couldn't explain the emptiness he felt or bridge the growing distance between him and his family-so he deployed again. And again. And again...until his marriage reached its breaking point. Now, with everything on the line, Trent has one last chance to prove to his wife that he can be the man she needs ...if she'll have him

. . . to win back his only love.

Laura is blindsided when Trent returns home. Time and again, he chose his men over his family, and she's just beginning to put the pieces of her shattered heart back together. But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried-and a love that won't be denied. But can she trust that this time he's back to stay?

I'm a huge fan of Jessica Scott and was super excited to get an early copy of Back to You for review thanks to the publisher through NetGalley.

I've wanted Trent and Laura's story since I first read Shane and Jen's book. I knew there was more to what was going on with Trent and couldn't wait to find out the truth. I'm going to say up front, you need to have tissues handy while reading this book.

Back to You was a very emotional read for me. I love a book that pulls me in completely, and Trent and Laura's story did from the very beginning. I could feel how hurt Laura was by Trent's repetitive deployments, especially once she found out he was volunteering. I think I was almost as angry as Laura was at him at one point. I have to say I loved when Trent started talking to a counselor and he could finally understand why he felt the need to continue to volunteer. I bawled like a baby when he explained to Laura his reason.

I also loved that it seemed very real and not sugar-coated at all that Trent would have trouble stepping back in and being a father to his kids. I knew in my heart he loved the kids every bit as much as he loved Laura. I felt so bad for Trent when he yelled at his kids because he couldn't handle the craziness, and it broke my heart to see how scared he was that the kids might not forgive him for his lapse.

The chemistry between Laura and Trent was there even when they were in the process of getting divorced. I loved that they both still loved one another so much and Laura was even willing to stand by Trent as he went through a court martial. I knew if they could just start talking and spend more time together, they could make a go at their marriage again. I loved how they knew each other so well it was like they had never been apart once they made love again. Funniest scene ever was Trent finding Laura's vibrator while she was in the shower. OMG I laughed so hard I almost fell off my sofa. Laura and Trent both had to work to make their relationship strong again, and I loved they did it with both laughter and tears.

I've loved each book in the Coming Home series, but have to say Trent and Laura's story is my favorite to date. I love the romance of these stories and how much emotion each one pulls from me when I read them. Back to You is another winner from Ms. Scott.
