DEEP COVER (LOVE OVER DUTY #3)

ARE THEY IN TOO DEEP?

Ex-Navy SEAL Cabe Moss always comes when called to duty―at all costs. Even though the death of his fiancée nearly destroyed him, Cabe won’t let his past interfere with any work that has to get done. When his latest task pushes him to team up with FBI Agent Amy Murray, a fierce beauty with the undercover skills to match, Cabe must admit that, for the first time in years, he wants to do more than just complete their mission together…

Amy was born ready for this assignment, but working side-by-side with the strong, silent, and frustratingly professional Cabe seems to be the biggest challenge of all. But when the sparks begin to fly―and the stakes rise to dangerous heights―the only thing Amy is left worrying about is how she can resist him. Their lives may be in danger, but their hearts hold the biggest risk of all…

Nikki’s Review:

Oh man, this one may be my favourite in the series! I knew Cabe would bring me to my knees...and I couldn't wait!

Cabe is mourning the death of his fiancée, Jess. He walks through life not fully immersed in it. He's trying to move on, but the thought of it shreds his heart. Until he meets Agent Amy Murray.

Amy is all work and no play. She's an FBI agent with something to prove. But Cabe Moss makes her want to break all her rules and take a risk.

The slow simmer of passion in this book was amazing. It was frustrating at times because I wanted them to get down to the hot and sweaty stuff. But they both needed to tread a bit carefully. Sweet baby Jesus, when Cabe and Amy finally hit the sheets, it took my damn breath away! Cabe has a deliciously filthy mouth. And he uses it for more than whispering sweet nothings.

I was totally caught up in the undercover mission they were both working on. I felt like I was trying to solve a puzzle by gathering the bits of clues that were thrown my way. As much as I liked that aspect of the story, I appreciated that it didn't take away from the romance.

Every time Scarlett Cole let us "see" inside Cabe's head, my heart both broke and mended. His difficulty keeping Jess in the past and allowing Amy in was so hard to read. I hurt for him. The journey to his heart healing, while sad at times, was beautiful.

I appreciated that Amy wasn't meant to replace Jess, or even erase her from Cabe's memory. She was meant to make Cabe happy again; meant to help him find a new and different happiness with her.

The chemistry between these two was powerful. They complimented each other well in their careers and personal lives. Cabe had to fight his need to shield her from everything. He knew he couldn't clip her wings when it came to her job. That just made me love him more.

Scarlett Cole never fails to weave an amazing story that grips me from the first page. Her writing is a source of comfort for me. I know I can expect to be fulfilled in every way when I dive into one of the worlds she's created.

Ya, I really do think that this book is my favourite in the series. But don't get me wrong, I love my men Six and Mac! You need to read their books! You could technically read this book as a stand alone, but don't cheat yourself out of enjoying the first two books. Read them all. In order of course, because my eye twitches when series are read out of order!

Now I need to beg Scarlett for books for Harley and Lite!

Georgia ripped off her coat and tucked it around the man of the floor. The air was sharp against her skin. Without thinking, she used her hand to move the stray hairs from across his face, and the man gasped. She checked his pulse and could tell the blood loss was getting dangerous.
“What’s your name?” she asked as she shone her light in his eyes. The tightness in her gut relaxed a little when they responded as they should.
The man hissed in a breath. “Lennon.”
“Do you know what day it is?” she asked.
“April . . . fucking . . . Fool’s . . . day.”
“Well, Lennon,” she said calmly, “the paramedics are almost here, and we’ll get you out of here soon.” She reached for his uninjured hand and squeezed it between hers. There was a spark of static between them, white and powerful. His life force. The thought was overwhelming.
“Let me go . . .”
She released his clammy hand immediately. “I’m sorry, I was just trying to give you some comfort. I—”
He reached for her hand, gasping. His fingers were large against hers. “No . . . you should . . . let . . . me . . . go.”
His eyes rolled closed.
No! She wouldn’t let him die. She tapped the side of his face until his eyes opened. “Wake up. I am not letting you go anywhere,” she said, knowing that any semblance of the professionalism to which she usually clung was slipping away. She believed patients’ stories about tunnels of white light, and seeing loved ones, and auras dimming. And she knew everyone needed to be allowed to leave if they really felt it was their time. But there was something so different about Lennon. She could feel his life force vibrate from his hand into hers, as if she taken hold of an electric fence. The energy was slipping away from him, and she would do anything to put it back in him.
He tugged her down toward him, so his lips could brush against her ear. “I’m . . . tired . . . of my life. Just . . . let me . . . go.”
His eyes closed, again. She rested her forehead on his. “Your work here on Earth isn’t done, Lennon,” she said, tears burning her eyes. “And I am not going to let you go.”

Nikki's Review:

I was not ready for this book. I've been mentally preparing myself for Lennon's story since the first book in this series. All of my preparation didn't save me from the heartache. I was shattered.

I fell in love with Lennon at the beginning of the series. He was a jerk who often said hurtful things to his band mates. Band mates is putting it lightly; these are his brothers in every way that counts. No matter how much Lennon pushes them away, they never give up on him. One of the things I adore most about this series is the sense of loyalty and love between the men. They've all walked through their personal version of hell, but they formed a family.

When Lennon's life is shattered during a tragic tour bus accident, he's ready to give up...on everything. Without the ability to play drums he feels he has no purpose. Even writing this I have a lump in my throat. I can vividly see the scene of the accident playing through my head. The hopelessness and devastation in Lennon's voice guts me.

Georgia is a celebrated neurosurgeon. She comes from a long line of neurosurgeons. Her father and her brothers often make her feel awful by picking apart and diminishing her accomplishments in surgery. Georgia is the kind of heroine that I love. She's struggling with her family, but she's so strong and capable. The way she takes Lennon in hand without coddling him is amazing. She's the perfect balance of sensitive and firm. She doesn't let him wallow. It would have been so easy to just take care of Lennon and do everything for him. But she knows that's not doing him any favours. I think Lennon was thrown off balance by her. He wasn't expecting her.

In true Scarlett Cole fashion, the chemistry between the hero and heroine was off the charts! Lennon is crazy sexy, and Georgia is happy to love up on him all the damn time. And who can blame her?

Lennon has so many layers, and as each gets peeled back, he's able to grow a little more. It was amazing watching these two get stronger together on every level. It's like they fed off of each other and brought out the good stuff.

This was a tough book to read. All the books in this series are difficult, but Lennon's story has such an intense feel of anguish. Scarlett Cole has the ability to draw the reader in and really make you feel what the characters are going through. The emotions of the characters often felt like they were sitting on my chest. I loved every second of it.

When this ARC landed on my kindle I wasn't sure how I felt. I was excited because I've wanted to go on Lennon's journey for so long, but I was also sad. I didn't want to say goodbye to these characters or the series. I'm not sure I've ever had such a visceral reaction to fictional characters before. I fell hard and I don't want to let go just yet. Or ever. I'm glad that the Preload guys got their HEA's. But what makes this so realistic is that even though they all found their soulmates, they each still have more growing and healing to do. The journey continues, but now they have the loves of their lives walking through it with them.

I suppose this could be read as a stand alone. Though I strongly recommend starting from the beginning with, Jordan Reclaimed. There are so many intimate details that carry throughout the series. I think you'll have a better understanding of all the guys if you read from the start.

The coach gave an ominous groan as it finally gave up fighting the truck and gravity and fell toward the blacktop.
Time slowed as they were thrown from their seats. He felt weightless for a moment, and then a jarring thud to the ribs knocked the breath out of him. Darkness followed.
Seconds, minutes—who the fuck knew?—passed before a burning pain flooded his body. He tried to focus on where he was. His legs were tangled on something, the strap of Nik’s laptop bag. And it felt as though the bus had landed on his chest. It was impossible to draw a breath through the excruciating agony.
He tried to move his arm, but it felt like a thousand knives pressed deep into his skin. He vomited from the pain.
Fuck.
He looked to his arm and could see bone. The spins returned, and he was sick again.
Fuck.
Shudders racked his body.
Voices filtered through.
“Jenny, oh fuck, sweetheart. Stay still.”
Nik.
Lennon couldn’t see him properly. Everything was blurry.
A child cried, but he couldn’t tell which.
He gasped in another breath, wincing as his ribs fought against the movement.
“Elliott’s leg is broken!” he heard Kendalee shout. From his position on the floor he could see Pixie. Her eyes were closed and she was still. Jordan held her hand tenderly.
A cold sweat covered his skin, the bus suddenly frigid as air weaved its way toward him through the broken glass. He moved his gaze to the ceiling. Fuck, he could see the gray sky through the windows. What he wouldn’t give for just a moment of sunshine.
What he wouldn’t give for someone to hold his hand.
What he wouldn’t give to just be released from all of it.
His breathing became harder, his heart rate slowing.
The sun wasn’t going to come. And he was alone.

FINAL SIEGE (LOVE OVER DUTY #2)

IN THE LINE OF FIRE…

Former SEAL Malachai “Mac” MacCarrick is all about the future he’s created with his Navy brothers in Eagle Securities, taking assignments in the most dangerous places, and doing things no one but ex-military would attempt. But when an urgent phone call brings his troubled past—and the woman he once loved—into the present, it’s a chance to redeem himself that he can’t refuse.

STRAIGHT TO THE HEART…

An investigative journalist researching an explosive story, Delaney Shapiro tells herself she got over Mac—and his role in her brother’s death—a long time ago. But the first moment she sees him at her bedside in an overseas hospital, she knows it’s not true. Every moment together rekindles the desire that once burned between them, and now that she’s a target for an emerging Russian arms dealer, Mac won’t let her out of his sight. To protect her, he’ll risk it all—including his life…

Nikki’s Review:

Is there anything hotter than an uber alpha SEAL, who loves his woman with an intensity that'll leave you lightheaded? I think not! Sigh...I loved Mac so hard.

The first book in this series, Under Fire was really good. I was blown away at the amount of research it must have taken to make it feel so real. But this book, knocked my socks off! There was something about Mac that really pulled at me. He's strong and incredibly brave, but he's also carrying around a broken heart and guilt for something that wasn't his fault. I think I was kind of hurting for him. The weight on his shoulders was palpable.

Delaney is my favourite kind of heroine. She's sassy, stubborn, fiercely independent, and has a ridiculously kind heart. She wants to change the world and bring the bad guys to justice.

Even though tragedy pulled them apart many years ago, the chemistry between them has never faded. When Delaney needs Mac, he doesn't hesitate to put her above everything else. Sigh...he's wonderful. I loved the slow burn in this book. The connection between the characters is alive and well, but with all the unresolved issues and secrets between them, they needed to move slow. Don't get me wrong, it was crazy frustrating waiting for the sexy times, but it was so worth it. Plus, it wouldn't have been authentic to the story to have Delaney and Mac just hop into bed. They needed to find their footing with each other.

There's so much going on in this book. The romance is swoon worthy and beautiful. The suspense/action component is so damn exciting. I felt like I was on this adventure with them. This series has a sexy James Bond kinda feel to it. I was certainly never bored! Every page kept me engaged and anticipating what was coming next.

It was heartbreaking watching Delaney and Mac navigate the murky waters of blame and guilt. The death of Delaney's brother, Brock, has kept them apart for so long. One thing I can always count on when I read a book by Scarlett Cole is all the emotion. Oy! I'm not sure any other author can pull so many feelings from me. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster the entire time...and I love it.

As always, Scarlett Cole has given us a book with a solid, well-executed plot, and characters that you'll want to be friends with.

I'm really looking forward to Cabe's book! I'm already anticipating that I'll have myself a good snot and bawl. I highly recommend that you start with book one, Under Fire. The suspense aspect in both books are connected. Also, you don't want to miss Six and Louisa's story!
