The temptation to say “Yes, Frankie, please squash him like a bug while I clap and watch” was so, so strong—like, the guys who pull semi trucks with their teeth strong. Instead, Lucy played along with her best friend’s fiancé’s brother— OMG, that was now the name of her imaginary all-girl ska band—and smiled sweetly up at him.

“He was bothered by my dinner order, honey.”

“Really?” Frankie looked down at her plate, over to the dipshit, and then right at her. There was no missing the devil in his eyes right before he turned his attention back to the other man. “What’s wrong with what my girl’s eating?”

Mr. In Her Business blanched. Literally. The color drained out of his face so fast that he resembled one of those swipe right before and after photos on makeover blogs. How in the hell she managed to not laugh out loud she had no frickin’ clue.

“N-n-nothing,” the man stuttered.

Nope. He was not getting off that easily.

She looked up at Frankie, still standing next to her chair, his big hand braced on the back of it, and said in the clueless voice that anyone with a brain would know meant there was danger ahead, “He said I should have ordered a salad, then I might have a chance to move from a five to an eight. I’m a five because I have great tits.”

Thunderous didn’t begin to describe the dark look of pure vengeance that crossed Frankie’s face, making even the freckles that crossed over the bridge of his nose look scary. Mr. Buttinsky made a little squeaking noise that reminded Lucy of the sound of air coming out of a balloon when someone pulled the tip taut as it was deflating. Frankie took a step forward, menace vibrating off of him in waves. The other guy didn’t bother to say a word, he just took off, weaving his way at a fast clip through the crowded bar and out the front door. Lucy liked to imagine that he peed his pants a little as he did so.

“Thanks, Frankie,” she said to the man still staring at the departing figure of Mr. Peed His Pants. “I owe you one.”

Her ginger knight in well-fitting jeans and a T-shirt made some kind of noise that maybe was a response in the affirmative. It sounded kinda like “no problem.” Whatever. She was used to that from guys. She was only of interest until a hotter, skinnier, or prettier woman came along. It

was the universal fat chick cloaking device.

Determined not to let it annoy her as much as it usually would, she turned back to her jalapeño cheeseburger, spicy fries, and soda. Now she could finally enjoy her dinner in peace.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Frankie clunked down a three-fourths filled mug of beer on the other side of her table, pulled out the chair across from her, and sat down. Before she could even ask what he was doing, he waved the waitress over and told her he wanted whatever Lucy was eating, plus an extra order of fries and another beer. Once she’d left, he turned his attention to Lucy and gave her what could only be described as a vibrator smile. She named it that in her head—thankfully only in her head—because she now had a desperate need for her vibrator and maybe a fresh pack of batteries.

“You’re not gonna make me eat alone now that we’re on a date, are you?” he asked, swiping one of her fries.

About Avery

USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Liza's Review:

I've wanted Frankie Hartigan's book from the moment we first met him. I knew it would take a super special woman to make him give up his man-whore ways, and honestly I absolutely loved Lucy Kavanagh so very much!!!

I can say enough times how much I loved this story. Muffin Top is a sweet, sexy, funny, and snarky story. I have to say that Lucy Kavanagh is one of the best heroines ever from Avery Flynn. I love she makes no excuses for her size and is extremely happy with her life. Of course her size seems to be an issue for others, and because of how she was treated in high school, she really isn't looking forward to going home for her high school reunion. Enter Frankie Hartigan, who gets extremely pissed to hear some random guy food shaming Lucy at the bar for her food choices. I won't lie, when he wanted to flatten the guy for being such a tool, I started falling head over heels for Frankie. When he agrees to be Lucy's fake date for her high school reunion, I tumbled over completely.

Muffin Top pulled all the emotions from me. I loved watching Frankie and Lucy go from basically only hanging out in passing when their friends were together to falling in love over a wild and fun road trip. Frankie is on a dating and sex sabbatical and Lucy needs a fake date so her high school friends won't give her a hard time. Seriously the more time these two spent together to more I fell in love with them as a couple, just as they fell in love with each other. They had smoking hot chemistry from the moment they actually gave in to their attraction, and I loved they each really seemed to get the other.

Not saying everything was easy for these two to get their final happily ever after. Lucy and Frankie both have issues that each could have ended any chance of them being together. I completely understood where Lucy was coming from, but hated seeing her color Frankie based upon how people from her past had treated her. Frankie's past as a man-whore totally played partly into Lucy's insecurities, as she went against every type Frankie had ever had. Love is a roller coaster, and the ride to happily ever after for Frankie and Lucy kept me on the edge of my seat. Through tears of pain and happiness, Muffin Top gave me the perfect ending for Lucy and Frankie. Seriously everything about this book just gave me the feels.

Avery Flynn has been a go-to author for me pretty much from the moment I read her first book. She writes rom-com that is full of emotions and I always find myself laughing out loud multiple times while reading her books. I highly recommend Muffin Top to readers who love emotional contemporary romances.

BUTTERFACE (THE HARTIGANS #1)

It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…

Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.

I recognize him immediately. The sexiest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.

But then he kisses me.

And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.

Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.

Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.

But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.

Because this is not a make-over story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

Contemporary Romance

Liza's Review:

As soon as I finished reading the last book in the Harbor City series from Avery Flynn, I wrote my review and hoped we would get books about each of the Hartigan siblings. When I saw Butterface was being released and it was the first book in the Hartigan series, I was absolutely over the moon to start reading this book. OMG it was worth every single minute I had to wait!!!

Gina Luca isn't your classic beauty. In fact she has heard herself described as "butterface" so many times, she has accepted she will never be seen as beautiful. She totally accepts herself for who she is and is happy in her own skin. She also has started her own business as a wedding planner and is living in and renovating her grandparents Victorian home. When she is pushed on the Kiss Cam at one of the weddings she is overseeing, she never expects the super sexy police officer Ford Hartigan to kiss her in front of everyone.

Ford Hartigan has always gone his own way in life. He comes from a family of firefighters yet has always wanted to be a police officer. He has always been a rule follower and is happy being a detective for the organized crime task force for the Waterbury Police Department. His work life and personal life mix when he is put on protective duty for Gina Luca when her grandfather's body is discovered in the attic walls during renovation. As Ford is investigating organized crime, and Gina's brothers are on the low level ladder in that field, them dating could be seen as a conflict of interest. However, as his Captain is the one who puts him on protective duty, Ford is pretty much following the rules.

I loved this story and really loved seeing Gina and Ford slowly move to a real relationship from the fake one they start out with for her family. The attraction between them was there from the very beginning, and I love that Ford truly saw Gina as beautiful. While I absolutely hated he wasn't up front with Gina about his protection detail being work related, I did love he was totally honest about what he thought of her appearance and his feeling for her all along. I honestly got all the feels while watching Gina and Ford fall in love. Gina and Ford had amazing chemistry and I loved they couldn't seem to keep their hands off each other. Gina makes not excuses or changes to her appearance to try and get her man and I loved her even more for being completely comfortable in her own skin. Not that she doesn't feel pain when people say ugly things about her appearance, she just accepts her looks and doesn't try and make changes. Ford seeing her for more than she saw herself make me happy sigh. I also love that while he didn't have to do so, he even was watching out for her brothers along the way.

I adored every single minute of reading Butterface. Avery Flynn has become one of my go-to contemporary romance authors and I anxiously await each new release. I've already added Muffin Top, book 2 in the Hartigan series to my to be read list for September. I can't wait to see Frankie Hartigan meet his match!

Excerpt:
“Do not disrespect the Kiss Cam, Hartigan!” someone bellowed out as the chanting crowd grew more restless. And louder.
“One quick kiss,” he said, his tone grim with a thread of something more vulnerable underneath. “Then, they’ll leave us alone.”
That’s when Gina’s gaze moved from her own face, blotchy with embarrassment on the screen, over to him. The tips of his ears were scarlet, and he was tapping the tips of his middle finger and thumb together like he was keeping rhythm for a ska band.
He was hiding it better, but the reality was he wasn’t enjoying this anymore than she was.
Glancing from the screen to the actual man himself, her lungs tightened. He was a big guy, and she wasn’t just talking about his broad shoulders that filled out his tux to a mouthwatering degree. He had to have at least four inches on her own five foot ten.
He glanced down, making eye contact, and for a second they weren’t the hottie and the nottie. They were two people stuck in a completely socially awkward situation that they had no control over.
She nibbled the inside of her cheek and considered her options before deciding that Ford was right. A quick peck would get the videographer out of their faces and divert the boisterous crowd’s attention to another couple happier to indulge in this bit of insanity. Then, she could finish up the last of her duties and go home to her peaceful, if totally messy, mid-renovation Victorian.
She let out a shaky breath, not sure she was making the right decision. “Fine. A kiss. Whatever.”
Gina had barely gotten the words out when his large hands cupped her face, sending electric shock waves through her that made her lips part slightly with surprise. He dipped his head down—and he kissed her.
The roar of approval from the crowd faded to almost nothing when he seemed to groan involuntarily. Her body approved and made an answering sound of its own. At her encouragement, his tongue slicked across her bottom lip, and her mind lost all reasonable thought. Teasing her senses and sending her heartbeat into overdrive, she softened against him, practically melting against his hard, muscular chest. Somewhere in the back of her mind she registered that people were cheering. She just couldn’t for the life of her care. The world turned electric as the air practically vibrated against her skin as he deepened the kiss. His tongue swept against hers in a brief but oh-so-potent move that had her clutching his lapel before she’d even realized she’d lifted her hands.
Then, almost as soon as it began, he lifted his head and stepped back, breaking the connection.
Dazed, she released his tuxedo jacket and looked around, catching sight of herself on the giant screen. Her face was flushed and her eyes hazy. She pressed her fingers to her still-tingling lips. She looked like a woman who’d been kissed senseless, which made sense because that was exactly what had just happened.
