Rescue My Heart

Rescue My Heart is the third book in the Animal Magnetism series from Jill Shalvis. The publisher is Berkley. From the back cover.~

She never wants a hero…

After a tragic stint in the National Guards, Adam Connelly returns to Idaho and to Belle Haven, the animal shelter he owns with his brothers. All Adam wants is to be alone. Then he opens the door to the past—the woman whose heart he once broke. Still gorgeous, still tough-as-nails, but this time, unusually vulnerable.

Holly learned the hard way to never depend on a man for anything. Now, of all men, Adam is the last one she wants to see, and the only one she needs. Her father has gone missing in the Bitterroot Mountains and she could use someone with tracking skills to help find him.

For Holly and Adam, each with their ghosts, a trek this desperate, this unpredictable, and this intimate, will have its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.

I’m a huge Jill Shalvis fan! She has been an auto-buy author of mine for years and when I heard Rescue My Heart was going to be up on NetGalley early, I was super excited to get a copy.

I loved Rescue My Heart so much. It seems like I’d been waiting for Adam’s story forever, and can only say it was totally worth the wait. We’d seen Adam and Holly interact a bit in other books from the series and I always wondered if they didn’t have some sort of history. There was an amazing tension between them and I couldn’t wait to see what happened if they could spend more time together.

Holly is worried because her father has gone missing and she needs someone to help her track him down. Adam is her first choice for guides, as he has the best tracking skills of anyone she knows. Adam is more than willing to go look for Holly’s father, but he doesn’t want her to come with him. All these years later, Adam is just as attracted to Holly as when they were teens. He is in a bit of a bad place still following his last tour in Afghanistan. He is still having some issues with PTSD and really just wants to be left alone. Holly is determined to go with Adam no matter what he wants and makes sure she is included. Even after so many years apart, Adam and Holly have amazing chemistry together. They also can’t seem to keep their hands off of each other. Jill Shalvis writes some of the sexiest love scenes, and she totally delivers once again with the love scenes between Adam and Holly. Whether you love hot and steamy or sweet and tender, you will get your wish with this book.

I loved seeing how both Holly and Adam has grown and changed in their years apart, yet still loved one another just as much as they did many years ago. Not that either was quick to admit their true feelings. I also loved getting to spend time with Dell, Jade, Brady, and Lilah again. I’m a sucker for books in a series and love visiting with characters from prior books. While I loved all the books in this series, Rescue My Heart is my favorite of this series.

The official release date for Rescue My Heart is set for November 6, 2012 and can be purchased at your favorite bookstore or online retailer. For more information about this series or other books by Jill Shalvis, check out her website.

This second, or middle, book in the First Trilogy of the Black Swan series is a pure romance. Whereas the first book, My Familiar Stranger, could be read as a stand alone novel, BOOKS TWO and THREE are interdependent.

The Witch’s Dream begins with B Team on loan for temporary assignment to Black Swan headquarters in Edinburgh where they are supposed to fill in for stretched-thin resources and assist with a werewolf issue. Authors Bio:
Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of my mind for a few years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch (for the past thirteen years) I play Classic Rock music and manage one of Houston's premier R&B bands.

This series includes some of my education in the paranormal and fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing "metaphysician", but, of course, most of the material is fantasy. All of the books will feature strong female leads with strong male support.

Stolen

Stolen is the newest romantic suspense release from author Shiloh Walker. The publisher is Ballantine Books. From the back cover.~
Shay Morgan has stayed hidden for a long time. Living a reclusive life in Earth’s End, Alaska, she’s as far away as she can get from the trauma of her childhood and the man who hurt her long ago. But terror takes over Shay’s life yet again when an unknown stalker steals away the fragile peace she’s built for herself—targeting not only her but the one man who’s ever managed to get past the walls she’s built around herself.

Elliot Winter has lived through being falsely accused before—it ruined his military career. Now it’s happening all over again. And this time, his accuser is a twisted impostor who’s targeting his ex-girlfriend, Shay. Despite a fierce mutual attraction, Shay and Elliot broke up because Shay couldn’t let her guard down, couldn’t let Elliot in. But now they both need to trust each other to confront a psycho who seems to know all their secrets.

Hands down, Stolen is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. I was lucky enough to get an early copy from NetGalley. While I love all of Shiloh Walker’s books, she is a master when it comes to romantic suspense. I’ve read mysteries and thrillers all my life and have always been able to figure out the bad guy pretty early in a book/series. This is so not so with Ms. Walker’s books. While I usually have it narrowed down to a few characters, she keeps me guessing until right up to the reveal.

Really can’t say much about the book without giving major information away. I really only feel like I can highlight a few of the characters to keep from putting anything up that will give away the ending.

Shay Morgan: She has lived through hell and come out the other side way stronger than she sees herself. She is happy to have little contact with the outside world except via the computer. She has relived heavily on her assistant, Darcy, who she met and befriended while in college. She has only ever loved one man, but couldn’t open up enough about her past to have a future.

Elliot Winter: He wanted a future with Shay, but needed her to be open about her past first. He still loves her even though they are no longer together and is more than willing to help her out when she needs it.

Darcy Montgomery: She is Shay’s assistant and friend from college. Shay has recently noticed that Darcy is trying to direct her life more than just her career.

Lorna Winter: She has been trying to get Elliot and Shay back together every since they broke up. She has remained friends with Shay and is willing to do anything to help both her friend and her brother.

The official release date for Stolen is October 30, 2012. I highly suggest this book to anyone who enjoys the romantic suspense genre. I warn you in advance to be prepared to read this book in one sitting as it really was hard to put down once I started reading. Excerpt

“I can get them.” Hearing the terse sound of his own voice, he sighed and rubbed a hand down his face. “Sorry. I’m in a bitch of a mood. But I’ll take care of the mess. You should be back home, taking it easy, anyway.”
“Handing you three or four books isn’t going to slow my recovery any, I promise you, Elliot.” She smiled at him.
The dimple in her cheek winked and his heart stuttered in his chest. That dimple had always gotten to him. Damn it, how could she still get to him like this? Hadn’t he decided he was better off without the complication of Shay Morgan?
Shit. Clearing his throat, he focused his attention back on the books in front of him, stacking the books that he wouldn’t have to trash in one pile and the rest in another. “So how is that recovery going? You going to need physical therapy or anything?”
“No. I was lucky. If it hadn’t been for the coma and the head injuries, I probably would have been able to go home within a few days, but those complicated things. I ended up with pneumonia in ICU, but that’s not as bad as the other stuff.” From the corner of his eye, he saw her shrug. “It could have been a lot worse.”
“It sounds like it was bad enough.” He held up a hand and ticked the problems off on his fingers. “Coma. Head injuries. Pneumonia. Any of those could have been bad, just on their own. But all three? You should be taking it easy. So why aren’t you resting?”
She wrinkled her nose. “I’ve rested. Two weeks, flat on my back.” Her fingers toyed with the folds of her long denim skirt, twisting them, smoothing them out. Twist, smooth, twist, smooth…over and over… He wanted to reach over and catch her hands in his, hold them and get her to tell him what was wrong.
That wasn’t going to happen. So he focused on the obvious.
She was nervous about something. Very nervous. She wasn’t looking at him and she was fidgeting.
Elliot had learned to read people pretty damn well. It had come in handy during his years in the army, and in the years since he’d bought the bookstore.
Reading Shay wasn’t always easy because she was about as open as a closed book, but right now, she was nervous as hell.
Shifting around, he faced her and waited her out.
She shot a quick look at him, her eyes bouncing around to land somewhere in the vicinity of his chin before moving to linger on his right shoulder as she said, “Besides, I need to ask you a question.”
“I’m all ears...”

The Bridge

The Bridge is the newest release from NYT bestselling author Karen Kingsbury. The publisher is Howard Books. From the back cover.~

Number one New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury delivers an instant classic with this heartwarming Christmas story about a hundred-year flood, lost love, and the beauty of enduring friendships.

Molly Allen lives alone in Portland, but she left her heart back in Tennessee with a man she walked away from five years ago. They had a rare sort of love she hasn’t found since.

Ryan Kelly lives in Nashville after a broken engagement and several years on the road touring with a country music duo. He can still hear Molly’s voice encouraging him to follow his dreams; Molly, whose memory stays with him. At least he can visit The Bridge—the oldest bookstore in historic downtown Franklin—and remember the hours he and Molly once spent there.

For thirty years, Charlie and Donna Barton have run The Bridge, providing the people of middle Tennessee with coffee, conversation, and shelves of good books—even through dismal book sales and the rise of digital books. Then in May, the hundred-year flood swept through Franklin and destroyed nearly every book in the store.

Now the bank is pulling the lease on The Bridge. Despondent and without answers, Charlie considers the unthinkable. Then tragedy strikes, and suddenly, everything changes. In the face of desperate brokenness and lost opportunities, could the miracle of a second chance actually unfold?

The Bridge is a love story set against the struggle of the American bookstore, a love story you will never forget.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of The Bridge from NetGalley. I’m a big fan of Karen Kingsbury and was really excited to read a book set in my backyard. I live in the Nashville area and was here when the hundred-year flood hit. I can picture exactly where The Bridge is located in Franklin, and know how much damage occurred in that area.

Kingsbury gives her readers another winner with The Bridge. This book is all about second chances and I openly admit it brought me to tears several times. Ryan and Molly met and fell in love at school in Nashville, but an outside force comes between them and Molly ends up moving home. While Ryan and Molly both move on with their lives, neither has ever forgotten or stopped loving the other. Ryan and Molly met Charlie and Donna Barton at The Bridge and would spend hours there reading to one another. Five years later, Charlie and Donna are about to lose The Bridge due to damage from the hundred-year flood that hit Franklin. Charlie becomes so despondent he truly feels like Donna would be better taken care of if he was dead. While Charlie does see that is not the way to fix things, he has a major car wreck on the way home and ends up in ICU in a Nashville hospital. Hearing about Charlie’s wreck brings Ryan, Molly and many of the former Bridge shoppers to the hospital to offer help to Donna and Charlie. I loved that Ryan and Molly finally got to reconnect and learn the truth about what had torn them apart all those years ago. They still had some trust issues at first, but they were given a second chance at love and didn’t want to waste it.

I had tears of sadness and joy while reading The Bridge, and totally felt uplifted when I finished reading. The official release date for The Bridge was October 23, 2012 and can be purchased from your favorite bookstore or online retailer.

Lean On Me

Lean On Me is book 2 in the Holloway series from HelenKay Dimon. The publisher is Carina Press. From the author’s website.~

Cassidy Clarke once climbed the world's highest mountains, but after an unexpected illness ends her career she's back in her hometown, broke and hoping for a little luck. But the townsfolk aren't exactly putting out a welcome mat for the woman who once snubbed them in the media, despite her apologies now.

Mitch Anders knows someone has set up camp on the grounds of his plant nursery, and he's surprised to find his sexy high school crush ducking questions about where she's staying. Though he's sworn to stop cleaning up other people's messes, Mitch offers Cassidy a job and a place to stay—his place. Bed-sharing optional, but definitely welcome.

Out of options and too attracted to Mitch to keep things platonic, Cassidy says yes to his offer. She wants to get back on her feet financially and start a new career. She never expects to suffer a different kind of fall, one that has her believing Mitch just might bring her something bigger and better than luck.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of Lean On Me from NetGalley. I’ve been a fan of HelenKay Dimon’s for years and couldn’t wait to read her newest book. The official publication date is set for October 22, 2012.

I really enjoyed Lean On Me. I liked Cassidy and thought her hometown was kind of crappy to her for one off-handed remark she made years ago. She has run into a bad spot financially and is lucky enough to have Mitch Anders come to her aid. I really loved the chemistry between Cassidy and Mitch. I’ve come to expect some pretty sexy scenes from Dimon and she totally delivered with Lean On Me. While I loved the chemistry, the protectiveness Mitch feels for Cassidy was really sweet. Of course, Mitch does mess up royally with Cassidy at one point, but he is so protective of her when anyone in town tries to attack her.

Lean On Me is a really fast, fun and sexy read from HelenKay Dimon. Lean On Me is a digital only release from Carina Press and can be found at Carina Press or your favorite online retailer. For more information about HelenKay Dimon and her books, check out her website.

Wolf Moon

Wolf Moon is the 4th ebook in the Moonstruck series from Silver James. From the author’s website.~

Sean Donaldson, former combat medic and demolition expert, answers an SOS from an old Army buddy and rides smack dab into the middle of a conspiracy. Murder and kidnapping are just the tip of the iceberg. Going undercover with a biker gang seems the quickest solution but Sean’s best intentions are complicated by Annie Simmons and her son, Cody.

Annie is a waitress at the Half Dollar Bar and Grill just scraping by to provide a better life for her son. She doesn’t want a man in her life, especially a scary dude like “Boomer,” the big biker who steals a part of her heart. What she doesn’t know about the lies he’s told can hurt her…and put Cody in danger.

Secrets, lies, and betrayals are more personal under the full moon but when a Wolf fights for his heart, he’ll risk his life to make sure the family he loves survives.

Warning: When it’s the month of the Wolf Moon, anybody who gets between a moonstruck Wolf and his mate deserves what they get. Blood, sex, and four-letter words dead ahead.

I’ve been waiting for Sean’s story since he first appeared in this series. Something about him just grabbed my heart. I couldn’t wait for him to finally find his mate, and I loved watching him fall. As he was in the small town to help out his friend Danny, it wasn’t the best time for his wolf to finally recognize his mate. Annie is attracted to Sean when she first meets him, yet she can’t reconcile her attraction to the tough-guy biker “Boomer”. He does keep the other bikers from messing with her, and even comes to her rescue when her car dies. Plus, her son Cody loves Boomer from the moment they meet. Annie can tell there is something more to Boomer, but isn’t prepared for the truth when she first finds out.

Sean and Annie had amazing chemistry together. Of course, Sean quickly realizes his feelings for Annie and Cody could put them in danger. He still hasn’t located Danny and knows he has to find a way to protect Annie and Cody while he figures out what is going on. Not that Sean has to do everything alone. He gets the help he needs from several of his pack mates for both protection and locating Danny, and even has Cody in his corner when it comes to winning Annie’s heart.

I totally understood Annie being hesitant when she found out Sean was a wolf. Of course since I’d love him from the moment he appeared on the page, I got a little upset she didn’t see him like I did. However, I knew she was strong enough to handle anything, and that included Sean and his pack.

I felt that Silver James totally delivered with Wolf Moon, and am already counting down the days until the next book in the Moonstruck series. For more information about Silver James and her books, check out her website.

Hunk for the Holidays

Hunk for the Holidays is the newest release from author Katie Lane. The official release date was September 25, 2012. From the back cover.~

Always putting business before pleasure, Cassie McPherson works hard for her family's construction business. That might explain why she doesn't have a date for the company Christmas party. But it doesn't quite explain why she's crazy enough to hire an escort for the event or - crazier still - why she's dying to unwrap him like a present . . .

With whiskey-colored eyes and a killer smile, James is one gorgeous hunk who really knows how to fill out a tuxedo. He charms everyone, including Cassie. And when the night ends, the party doesn't stop. As Cassie falls, literally, into his bed, James falls head over heels in love. Now he has to figure out a way to tell her the truth: he's not an escort. He's her family's fiercest business rival. But all he wants for Christmas is her . . .

I requested Hunk for the Holidays from NetGalley after a friend told me how much she loved it. This is the first book I’ve read by Katie Lane, but won’t be my last since I really enjoyed her voice.

I loved Cassie from the moment she appeared on the page. She is such a strong character yet still hires an escort to take to her company Christmas party to avoid having to deal with sympathetic looks and matchmaking from family and family friends. When James shows up in her office she mistakes him for the escort she has hired for the night, and for the first time ever, she is thinking about sleeping with her paid escort. Unknown to Cassie, James is actually James Sutton, her family’s biggest business rival. He was only in her office because he had an appointment scheduled with her father.

Cassie and James had really great chemistry. While I myself have never experienced love at first sight, I kinda got that feel with Cassie and James…maybe lust at first sight is more appropriate. They really did have great chemistry together and I was really cheering for them to make it the whole time I was reading. I knew Cassie wouldn’t be very understanding when she found out who James really was, and she reacted as I expected. I totally understood how Cassie felt but also had seen James try and tell her a couple of times who he really was. I knew part of the reason Cassie was so mad was because for probably the first time ever, she had real feelings for a man. James had the same problem once he and Cassie argued over their situation. He really fell hard and fast for Cassie, and wasn’t ready to accept less than everything from Cassie.

I also loved the secondary love story between Cassie’s brother Rory and Cassie’s best friend Amy. Amy and Rory had been attracted to one another since they first met when she came to work for the company. However, due to a lack of communication between the two, they hadn’t ever acted on said feelings. While I could see they would get a quick resolution to their love story, I really wish they had been given a book of their own. I would have loved to see Rory romance Amy to win her over.

I really enjoyed Hunk for the Holidays. While the entire romance took place over the course of 3-4 days, I liked it. Made me laugh out loud a few times, fan myself and others, and even tear up a couple of times. I really like when a book makes me feel a wide range of emotions. For more about Katie Lane, check out her website.

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet Blog Tour

Woohoo Darynda Jones Fans! I’m excited to host the next stop in the Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet Blog Tour!!  Thanks to Darynda and her awesome Gimlet Street Team, I have an excerpt featuring Charley and Ubie.

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet excerpt!!!

With renewed energy, I pulled back onto Academy— after hitting a
drive- through for a mocha latte— and had just started for home when
my phone rang.
“Yes?” I said, illegally talking on the phone while driving within the
city limits. Scoping for cops, I waited for Uncle Bob to stop talking to
whomever he was talking to and get back to me.
My uncle Bob, or Ubie as I most often referred to him, was a detective
for APD, and I helped him on cases from time to time. He knew I
could see the departed and used that to his advantage. Not that I could
blame him.
“Get that to her, then call the ME ay- sap.”
“Okay,” I said, “but I’m not sure what calling the medical examiner
ay- sap is going to accomplish. I’m pretty sure his name is George.”
“Oh, hey, Charley.”
“Hey, Uncle Bob. What’s up?”
“Are you driving?”
“No.”
“Have you heard anything?”
Our conversations often went like this. Uncle Bob with his random
questions. Me with my trying to come up with answers just as random.
Not that I had to try very hard. “I heard that Tiff any Gorham, a girl I
knew in grade school, still stuff s her bra. But that’s just a rumor.”
“About the case,” he said through clenched teeth. I could tell his teeth
were clenched because his words were suddenly forced. That meant he
was frustrated. Too bad I had no idea what he was talking about.
“I wasn’t aware that we had a case.”
“Oh, didn’t Cookie call you?”
“She called me a doody- head once.”
“About the case.” His teeth were totally clenched again.
“We have a case?”
But I’d lost him. He was talking to another officer. Or a detective. Or
a hooker, depending on his location and accessibility to cash. Though I
doubted he would tell a hooker to check the status of the DOA’s autopsy
report. Unless he was way kinkier than I’d ever given him credit for.
I found his calling me only to talk to other people very challenging.
“I’ll call you right back,” he said. No idea to whom.
The call disconnected as I sat at a light, wondering what guacamole
would look like if avocados were orange.
I finally shifted my attention to the dead kid in my backseat. He had
shoulder- length blond hair and bright blue eyes and looked somewhere
between fifteen and seventeen.
“You come here often?” I asked him, but my phone rang before he
could say anything. That was okay. He had a vacant stare, so I doubted
he would have answered me anyway.
“Sorry about that,” Uncle Bob said. “Do you want to discuss the
case?”
“We have a case?” I said again, perking up.
“How are you?”
He asked me that every time he called now. “Peachy. Am I the case? If
so, I can solve this puppy in about three seconds. I’m heading down San
Mateo toward Central in a cherry red Jeep Wrangler with a questionable
exhaust system.”
“Charley.”
“Hurry, before I get away!”

Blind Destiny

Blind Destiny is book 7 in the Grimm’s Circle series from author Shiloh Walker. From the author’s website.~

Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s back to hell she goes…

Grimm’s Circle, Book 7

Myrsina knows the stories. As one of the oldest of the Grimm, she had a hand in writing most of them, but only she knows the dark origin of the Seven Bloody Sisters. It springs from the place of her birth—and her death. A place of pain and misery to which she plans to never return. Unless forced.

When Luc appears on her doorstep, her heart twists with suppressed longing for the man who can never be hers. The only man who can make her do the impossible—go home.

Luc may be blind, but through their unique, bittersweet connection, even he can see that the task laid before them is ripping Sina’s soul apart. This time it isn’t as simple as fighting a demon that has escaped from the netherplains.

Sina must go back in time—to that cursed ground—and right a wrong that she unknowingly brought about. To write a new ending to a story that may give them both a chance at happily ever after. Assuming they survive.

Warning: This book contains a not-so-fairy-tale prince, a Snow White who was never very innocent, a lot of bloody fights, some ghosts, and a new sort of angel…

I was sent a copy from the author with the promise for an honest review. I’m a huge fan of Shiloh Walker and love her Grimm’s Circle series. Bonus for me, Blind Destiny is Snow White’s story, which is one of my favorite stories.

Sina has been in love with Luc from the moment she first met him. However, he has never shown that he has feeling for anyone other than his now ex-wife. I love the chemistry between Sina and Luc and think they really are perfect for one another. Both are snarky and stubborn and I love them each all the more for being that way.

Sina’s backstory wasn’t what I was expecting, but it totally worked for me. Walker gives her readers plenty of action with this story. Have to say she also scared me a bit with this one, and I loved it. Add in the wonderfully well written sex scenes and you have a winner all around for me.

The official release date for Blind Destiny is October 16, 2012 and you can buy it from your favorite online bookstore. I’m including buy links for both Amazon and B&N. For more information about the Grimm’s Circle or other books from Shiloh Walker, check out her website.
